Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco acelako hoti muttācāro, hatthāpalekhano, naehibhadantiko, natiṭṭhabhadantiko, nābhihaṭaṁ na uddissakataṁ na nimantanaṁ sādiyati. It’s when someone goes naked, ignoring conventions. They lick their hands, and don’t come or wait when called. ‘laṅgī, bhadante’ti. ‘A sticking point, sir!’ ‘Uddhumāyikā, bhadante’ti. ‘A bullfrog, sir!’ ‘Dvidhāpatho, bhadante’ti. ‘A forked path, sir!’ ‘Caṅgavāro, bhadante’ti. ‘A filter of ash, sir!’ ‘Kummo, bhadante’ti. ‘A tortoise, sir!’ ‘Asisūnā, bhadante’ti. ‘A butcher’s knife and chopping board, sir!’ ‘Maṁsapesi, bhadante’ti. ‘A scrap of meat, sir!’ ‘Nāgo, bhadante’ti. ‘A mighty serpent, sir!’
Yathā taṁ sutavatā sāvakena sammadeva satthusāsanaṁ ājānantena evamevaṁ bhadantena tapassinā samaṇassa gotamassa byākataṁ. The Honorable Tapassī has answered the ascetic Gotama like a learned disciple who rightly understands their teacher’s instructions. Sace me samaṇo gotamo tathā patiṭṭhahissati yathā bhadantena tapassinā patiṭṭhāpitaṁ; seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso dīghalomikaṁ eḷakaṁ lomesu gahetvā ākaḍḍheyya parikaḍḍheyya samparikaḍḍheyya; evamevāhaṁ samaṇaṁ gotamaṁ vādena vādaṁ ākaḍḍhissāmi parikaḍḍhissāmi samparikaḍḍhissāmi. If he stands by the position that he stated to Dīgha Tapassī, I’ll take him on in debate and drag him to and fro and round about, like a strong man would grab a fleecy sheep and drag it to and fro and round about!
