Nāgitasutta  With Nāgita 
Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ nāgitaṁ āmantesi: 
Then the Buddha said to Nāgita, 
“ke pana kho, nāgita, uccāsaddamahāsaddā, kevaṭṭā maññe macchavilope”ti? 
“Nāgita, who’s making that dreadful racket? You’d think it was fishermen hauling in a catch!” 
“Māhaṁ, nāgita, yasena samāgamaṁ, mā ca mayā yaso. 
“Nāgita, may I never become famous. May fame not come to me. 
Yo kho, nāgita, nayimassa nekkhammasukhassa pavivekasukhassa upasamasukhassa sambodhasukhassa nikāmalābhī assa akicchalābhī akasiralābhī, yassāhaṁ nekkhammasukhassa pavivekasukhassa upasamasukhassa sambodhasukhassa nikāmalābhī akicchalābhī akasiralābhī. 
There are those who can’t get the pleasure of renunciation, the pleasure of seclusion, the pleasure of peace, the pleasure of awakening when they want, without trouble or difficulty like I can.

Yo kho, nāgita, nayimassa nekkhammasukhassa pavivekasukhassa upasamasukhassa sambodhasukhassa nikāmalābhī assa akicchalābhī akasiralābhī, yassāhaṁ nekkhammasukhassa pavivekasukhassa upasamasukhassa sambodhasukhassa nikāmalābhī akicchalābhī akasiralābhī. 
There are those who can’t get the pleasure of renunciation, the pleasure of seclusion, the pleasure of peace, the pleasure of awakening when they want, without trouble or difficulty like I can. 
Asitapītakhāyitasāyitassa kho, nāgita, uccārapassāvo— 
What you eat, drink, chew, and taste ends up as excrement and urine. 
Piyānaṁ kho, nāgita, vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā— 
When loved ones decay and perish, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress arise. 
Asubhanimittānuyogaṁ anuyuttassa kho, nāgita, subhanimitte pāṭikulyatā saṇṭhāti— 
When you pursue meditation on the feature of ugliness, revulsion at the feature of beauty becomes stabilized. 
Chasu kho, nāgita, phassāyatanesu aniccānupassino viharato phasse pāṭikulyatā saṇṭhāti— 
When you meditate observing impermanence in the six fields of contact, revulsion at contact becomes stabilized. 
Pañcasu kho, nāgita, upādānakkhandhesu udayabbayānupassino viharato upādāne pāṭikulyatā saṇṭhāti— 
When you meditate observing rise and fall in the five grasping aggregates, revulsion at grasping becomes stabilized.

Tenāhaṁ, nāgita, tassa bhikkhuno na attamano homi gāmantavihārena. 
So I’m not pleased that that mendicant is living within a village. 
Idha panāhaṁ, nāgita, bhikkhuṁ passāmi āraññikaṁ araññe pacalāyamānaṁ nisinnaṁ. 
Take a mendicant in the wilderness who I see sitting nodding in meditation. 
Tassa mayhaṁ, nāgita, evaṁ hoti: 
I think to myself: 
Tenāhaṁ, nāgita, tassa bhikkhuno attamano homi araññavihārena. 
So I’m pleased that that mendicant is living in the wilderness. 
Idha panāhaṁ, nāgita, bhikkhuṁ passāmi āraññikaṁ araññe asamāhitaṁ nisinnaṁ. 
Take a mendicant in the wilderness who I see sitting without being immersed in samādhi. 
Tassa mayhaṁ, nāgita, evaṁ hoti: 
I think to myself: 
Tenāhaṁ, nāgita, tassa bhikkhuno attamano homi araññavihārena. 
So I’m pleased that that mendicant is living in the wilderness. 
Idha panāhaṁ, nāgita, bhikkhuṁ passāmi āraññikaṁ araññe samāhitaṁ nisinnaṁ.

So I’m not pleased that that mendicant is living within a village. 
Idha panāhaṁ, nāgita, bhikkhuṁ passāmi āraññikaṁ lābhiṁ cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṁ. 
Take a mendicant who I see in the wilderness receiving robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. 
Tenāhaṁ, nāgita, tassa bhikkhuno attamano homi araññavihārena. 
So I’m pleased that that mendicant is living in the wilderness. 
Yasmāhaṁ, nāgita, samaye addhānamaggappaṭipanno na kañci passāmi purato vā pacchato vā, phāsu me, nāgita, tasmiṁ samaye hoti antamaso uccārapassāvakammāyā”ti. 
Nāgita, when I’m walking along a road and I don’t see anyone ahead or behind I feel relaxed, even if I need to urinate or defecate.”

devatāpi kho, nāgita, ekaccā nayimassa nekkhammasukhassa pavivekasukhassa upasamasukhassa sambodhasukhassa nikāmalābhiniyo assu akicchalābhiniyo akasiralābhiniyo, yassāhaṁ nekkhammasukhassa pavivekasukhassa upasamasukhassa sambodhasukhassa nikāmalābhī akicchalābhī akasiralābhī. 
Even some of the deities can’t get the pleasure of renunciation, the pleasure of seclusion, the pleasure of peace, the pleasure of awakening when they want, without trouble or difficulty like I can. 
Tumhākampi kho, nāgita, saṅgamma samāgamma saṅgaṇikavihāraṁ anuyuttānaṁ viharataṁ evaṁ hoti: 
When you all come together to enjoy each other’s company, I think: 
Idhāhaṁ, nāgita, bhikkhū passāmi aññamaññaṁ aṅgulipatodakena sañjagghante saṅkīḷante. 
Take mendicants I see poking each other with their fingers, giggling and playing together. 
Tassa mayhaṁ, nāgita, evaṁ hoti: 
I think to myself: 
Idha panāhaṁ, nāgita, bhikkhū passāmi yāvadatthaṁ udarāvadehakaṁ bhuñjitvā seyyasukhaṁ passasukhaṁ middhasukhaṁ anuyutte viharante. 
Take mendicants I see eat as much as they like until their bellies are full, then indulge in the pleasures of sleeping, lying down, and drowsing. 
Tassa mayhaṁ, nāgita, evaṁ hoti: 
I think to myself: 
Idhāhaṁ, nāgita, bhikkhuṁ passāmi gāmantavihāriṁ samāhitaṁ nisinnaṁ. 
Take a mendicant living within a village who I see sitting immersed in samādhi. 
Tassa mayhaṁ, nāgita, evaṁ hoti: 
I think to myself: 
Tenāhaṁ, nāgita, tassa bhikkhuno na attamano homi gāmantavihārena. 
So I’m not pleased that that mendicant is living within a village. 
Idha panāhaṁ, nāgita, bhikkhuṁ passāmi āraññikaṁ araññe pacalāyamānaṁ nisinnaṁ. 
Take a mendicant in the wilderness who I see sitting nodding in meditation. 
Tassa mayhaṁ, nāgita, evaṁ hoti: 
I think to myself: 
Tenāhaṁ, nāgita, tassa bhikkhuno attamano homi araññavihārena. 
So I’m pleased that that mendicant is living in the wilderness.

Tenāhaṁ, nāgita, tassa bhikkhuno na attamano homi gāmantavihārena. 
So I’m not pleased that that mendicant is living within a village. 
Idha panāhaṁ, nāgita, bhikkhuṁ passāmi āraññikaṁ lābhiṁ cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṁ. 
Take a mendicant who I see in the wilderness receiving robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. 
Tenāhaṁ, nāgita, tassa bhikkhuno attamano homi araññavihārena. 
So I’m pleased that that mendicant is living in the wilderness. 
Yasmāhaṁ, nāgita, samaye addhānamaggappaṭipanno na kañci passāmi purato vā pacchato vā, phāsu me, nāgita, tasmiṁ samaye hoti antamaso uccārapassāvakammāyā”ti.

Atha kho te kosalakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā yenāyasmā nāgito tenupasaṅkamiṁsu. upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ nāgitaṁ etadavocuṁ:  The brahmin emissaries went up to him and said, 
“kahaṁ nu kho, bho nāgita, etarahi so bhavaṁ gotamo viharati? 
“Mister Nāgita, where is Mister Gotama at present? 
Oṭṭhaddhopi licchavī mahatiyā licchavīparisāya saddhiṁ yena mahāvanaṁ kūṭāgārasālā yenāyasmā nāgito tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ nāgitaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho oṭṭhaddhopi licchavī āyasmantaṁ nāgitaṁ etadavoca: 
Oṭṭhaddha the Licchavi together with a large assembly of Licchavis also approached Nāgita at the hall with the peaked roof. He bowed, stood to one side, and said to Nāgita, 
“kahaṁ nu kho, bhante nāgita, etarahi so bhagavā viharati arahaṁ sammāsambuddho, 
“Mister Nāgita, where is the Blessed One at present, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha? 
Atha kho sīho samaṇuddeso yenāyasmā nāgito tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ nāgitaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho sīho samaṇuddeso āyasmantaṁ nāgitaṁ etadavoca: 
Then the novice Sīha approached Nāgita. He bowed, stood to one side, and said to Nāgita, 
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho sīho samaṇuddeso āyasmato nāgitassa paṭissutvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho sīho samaṇuddeso bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: 
“Yes, sir,” replied Sīha. He went to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and told him of the people waiting to see him, adding:
