‘ayaṁ kho āyasmā sabbanimittānaṁ amanasikārā animittaṁ cetosamādhiṁ upasampajja viharati. ‘This venerable, not focusing on any signs, enters and remains in the signless immersion of the heart. Appeva nāma ayamāyasmā anulomikāni senāsanāni paṭisevamāno kalyāṇamitte bhajamāno indriyāni samannānayamāno— Hopefully this venerable will frequent appropriate lodgings, associate with good friends, and control their faculties. yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyyā’ti. Then they might realize the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life, and live having achieved with their own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.’ Evaṁ kho, moggallāna, tesaṁ devānaṁ ñāṇaṁ hoti: This too is how those gods know whether a person has anything left over or not.”
Ayaṁ vuccatāvuso, animittā cetovimutti. This is called the signless release of the heart. Ayaṁ kho, āvuso, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma ime dhammā nānātthā ceva nānābyañjanā ca. This is the way in which these things differ in both meaning and phrasing. Katamo cāvuso, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma ime dhammā ekatthā byañjanameva nānaṁ? And what’s the way in which they mean the same thing, and differ only in the phrasing? Rāgo kho, āvuso, pamāṇakaraṇo, doso pamāṇakaraṇo, moho pamāṇakaraṇo. Greed, hate, and delusion are makers of limits.
“‘Animitto cetosamādhi, animitto cetosamādhī’ti vuccati. “They speak of this thing called the ‘signless immersion of the heart’. Katamo nu kho animitto cetosamādhīti? What is the signless immersion of the heart? Tassa mayhaṁ, āvuso, etadahosi: It occurred to me: ‘idha bhikkhu sabbanimittānaṁ amanasikārā animittaṁ cetosamādhiṁ upasampajja viharati. ‘It’s when a mendicant, not focusing on any signs, enters and remains in the signless immersion of the heart. Ayaṁ vuccati animitto cetosamādhī’ti. This is called the signless immersion of the heart.’ So khvāhaṁ, āvuso, sabbanimittānaṁ amanasikārā animittaṁ cetosamādhiṁ upasampajja viharāmi. And so … I was entering and remaining in the signless immersion of the heart. Tassa mayhaṁ, āvuso, iminā vihārena viharato nimittānusāri viññāṇaṁ hoti. While I was in that meditation, my consciousness followed after signs. Atha kho maṁ, āvuso, bhagavā iddhiyā upasaṅkamitvā etadavoca: Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said,
