On the second day, too, those people said to him,

Soon afterwards, while reflecting in private, Venerable Sāriputta thought,
“Bhagavato ca, sāriputta, vipassissa bhagavato ca sikhissa bhagavato ca vessabhussa brahmacariyaṁ na ciraṭṭhitikaṁ ahosi.
“Sāriputta, the spiritual life established by the Buddhas Vipassī, Sikhī, and Vessabhū didn’t last long.
Bhagavato ca, sāriputta, kakusandhassa bhagavato ca koṇāgamanassa bhagavato ca kassapassa brahmacariyaṁ ciraṭṭhitikaṁ ahosī”ti.
But the spiritual life established by the Buddhas Kakusandha, Konāgamana, and Kassapa did.”
“Bhagavā ca, sāriputta, vipassī bhagavā ca sikhī bhagavā ca vessabhū kilāsuno ahesuṁ sāvakānaṁ vitthārena dhammaṁ desetuṁ.
“They made no effort to give detailed teachings to their disciples.
Seyyathāpi, sāriputta, nānāpupphāni phalake nikkhittāni suttena asaṅgahitāni tāni vāto vikirati vidhamati viddhaṁseti.
It’s like flowers on a wooden plank. If they’re not held together with a string, they’re scattered about, whirled about, and destroyed by the wind.
Evameva kho, sāriputta, tesaṁ buddhānaṁ bhagavantānaṁ antaradhānena buddhānubuddhānaṁ sāvakānaṁ antaradhānena ye te pacchimā sāvakā nānānāmā nānāgottā nānājaccā nānākulā pabbajitā te taṁ brahmacariyaṁ khippaññeva antaradhāpesuṁ.
Just so, after the disappearance of those Buddhas and the disciples awakened under them, those who were the last disciples allowed that spiritual life to disappear rapidly.
Bhūtapubbaṁ, sāriputta, vessabhū bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho aññatarasmiṁ bhiṁsanake vanasaṇḍe sahassaṁ bhikkhusaṅghaṁ cetasā ceto paricca ovadati anusāsati—
At one time, Sāriputta, the Buddha Vessabhū, the Perfected and the fully Awakened One, was staying in a certain frightening forest grove. He instructed a sangha of a thousand monks by reading their minds, saying,
Atha kho, sāriputta, tassa bhikkhusahassassa vessabhunā bhagavatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena evaṁ ovadiyamānānaṁ evaṁ anusāsiyamānānaṁ anupādāya āsavehi cittāni vimucciṁsu.
When they had been instructed by Buddha Vessabhū, their minds were freed from the corruptions through letting go.
Tatra sudaṁ, sāriputta, bhiṁsanakassa vanasaṇḍassa bhiṁsanakatasmiṁ hoti—yo koci avītarāgo taṁ vanasaṇḍaṁ pavisati, yebhuyyena lomāni haṁsanti.
But if anyone with sensual desire entered that frightening forest grove, they usually had goosebumps all over.
Ayaṁ kho, sāriputta, hetu ayaṁ paccayo yena bhagavato ca vipassissa bhagavato ca sikhissa bhagavato ca vessabhussa brahmacariyaṁ na ciraṭṭhitikaṁ ahosī”ti.
This is why the spiritual life established by those Buddhas did not last long.”
“Bhagavā ca, sāriputta, kakusandho bhagavā ca koṇāgamano bhagavā ca kassapo akilāsuno ahesuṁ sāvakānaṁ vitthārena dhammaṁ desetuṁ.
“The Buddhas Kakusandha, Konāgamana, and Kassapa were untiring in giving detailed teachings to their disciples.

This is why the spiritual life established by those Buddhas lasted long.”
“Āgamehi tvaṁ, sāriputta. Āgamehi tvaṁ, sāriputta.
“Hold on, Sāriputta.
Na tāva, sāriputta, satthā sāvakānaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paññapeti uddisati pātimokkhaṁ yāva na idhekacce āsavaṭṭhānīyā dhammā saṅghe pātubhavanti. Yato ca kho, sāriputta, idhekacce āsavaṭṭhānīyā dhammā saṅghe pātubhavanti, atha satthā sāvakānaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paññapeti uddisati pātimokkhaṁ tesaṁyeva āsavaṭṭhānīyānaṁ dhammānaṁ paṭighātāya.
The Teacher doesn’t lay down training rules or recite a monastic code until the causes of corruption appear in the Sangha.
Na tāva, sāriputta, idhekacce āsavaṭṭhānīyā dhammā saṅghe pātubhavanti yāva na saṅgho rattaññumahattaṁ patto hoti.
And they don’t appear until the Sangha has attained long standing,
Yato ca kho, sāriputta, saṅgho rattaññumahattaṁ patto hoti atha idhekacce āsavaṭṭhānīyā dhammā saṅghe pātubhavanti, atha satthā sāvakānaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paññapeti uddisati pātimokkhaṁ tesaṁyeva āsavaṭṭhānīyānaṁ dhammānaṁ paṭighātāya.
Na tāva, sāriputta, idhekacce āsavaṭṭhānīyā dhammā saṅghe pātubhavanti, yāva na saṅgho vepullamahattaṁ patto hoti.

Yato ca kho, sāriputta, saṅgho vepullamahattaṁ patto hoti, atha idhekacce āsavaṭṭhānīyā dhammā saṅghe pātubhavanti, atha satthā sāvakānaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paññapeti uddisati pātimokkhaṁ tesaṁyeva āsavaṭṭhānīyānaṁ dhammānaṁ paṭighātāya.

an abundance of the best material support,
Yato ca kho, sāriputta, saṅgho lābhaggamahattaṁ patto hoti, atha idhekacce āsavaṭṭhānīyā dhammā saṅghe pātubhavanti, atha satthā sāvakānaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paññapeti uddisati pātimokkhaṁ tesaṁyeva āsavaṭṭhānīyānaṁ dhammānaṁ paṭighātāya.
Na tāva, sāriputta, idhekacce āsavaṭṭhānīyā dhammā saṅghe pātubhavanti, yāva na saṅgho bāhusaccamahattaṁ patto hoti.
or great learning.
Yato ca kho, sāriputta, saṅgho bāhusaccamahattaṁ patto hoti, atha idhekacce āsavaṭṭhānīyā dhammā saṅghe pātubhavanti, atha satthā sāvakānaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paññapeti uddisati pātimokkhaṁ tesaṁyeva āsavaṭṭhānīyānaṁ dhammānaṁ paṭighātāya.
When the causes of corruption appear for any of these reasons, then the Teacher lays down training rules for his disciples and recites a monastic code in order to counteract these causes.
Nirabbudo hi, sāriputta, bhikkhusaṅgho nirādīnavo apagatakāḷako suddho sāre patiṭṭhito.
Sāriputta, the Sangha of monks is free from cancer and danger, stainless, pure, and established in the essence.
Imesañhi, sāriputta, pañcannaṁ bhikkhusatānaṁ yo pacchimako bhikkhu so sotāpanno avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaṇo”ti.
Even the least developed of these five hundred monks is a stream-enterer. They will not be reborn in the lower world, but are fixed in destiny and bound for awakening.”

He then gave a teaching and addressed Sāriputta and Moggallāna:
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho sāriputtamoggallānā bhagavato paccassosuṁ.
“Yes, sir.”
Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānappamukho bhikkhusaṅgho kīṭāgiriṁ gantvā assajipunabbasukānaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ kīṭāgirismā pabbājanīyakammaṁ akāsi—“na assajipunabbasukehi bhikkhūhi kīṭāgirismiṁ vatthabban”ti.
Soon afterwards a sangha of monks, headed by Sāriputta and Moggallāna, went to Kīṭāgiri and did the procedure of banishing Assaji and Punabbasuka, prohibiting them from staying at Kīṭāgiri.

14. The account of the going forth of Sāriputta and Moggallāna
Tena kho pana samayena sāriputtamoggallānā sañcaye paribbājake brahmacariyaṁ caranti.

Atha kho sāriputtassa paribbājakassa etadahosi—
But it occurred to him,
Atha kho āyasmā assaji sāriputtassa paribbājakassa imaṁ dhammapariyāyaṁ abhāsi—
And Assaji gave this teaching to the wanderer Sāriputta:
Atha kho sāriputtassa paribbājakassa imaṁ dhammapariyāyaṁ sutvā virajaṁ vītamalaṁ dhammacakkhuṁ udapādi—
When he had heard this teaching, Sāriputta experienced the stainless vision of the Truth:
Paccabyattha padamasokaṁ;
The sorrowless state that you have penetrated,
Paccabyattha → paccabyathā (bj, sya-all); paccavyathā (pts1ed); paccabyatha (tha-ap3:151 [Sāriputtattheraapadāna])
Addasā kho moggallāno paribbājako sāriputtaṁ paribbājakaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ, disvāna sāriputtaṁ paribbājakaṁ etadavoca—
When Moggallāna saw him coming, he said to Sāriputta,
Atha kho moggallāno paribbājako sāriputtaṁ paribbājakaṁ etadavoca—
Moggallāna said to Sāriputta,
Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānā yena te paribbājakā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā te paribbājake etadavocuṁ—
And they went to those wanderers and said,
Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānā yena sañcayo paribbājako tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā sañcayaṁ paribbājakaṁ etadavocuṁ—
Then Sāriputta and Moggallāna went to Sañcaya and said,
tatiyampi kho sāriputtamoggallānā sañcayaṁ paribbājakaṁ etadavocuṁ—
and a third time,
Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānā tāni aḍḍhateyyāni paribbājakasatāni ādāya yena veḷuvanaṁ tenupasaṅkamiṁsu.
They then took those two hundred and fifty wanderers and went to the Bamboo Grove.
Addasā kho bhagavā sāriputtamoggallāne dūratova āgacchante, disvāna bhikkhū āmantesi—
When the Buddha saw Sāriputta and Moggallāna coming, he said to the monks,
Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato pādesu sirasā nipatitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ—
Sāriputta and Moggallāna approached the Buddha, bowed down with their heads at his feet, and said,
Sāriputtamoggallānapabbajjākathā niṭṭhitā.
The account of the going forth of Sāriputta and Moggallāna is finished.
“Kiṁ pana tvaṁ, sāriputta, tassa brāhmaṇassa adhikāraṁ sarasī”ti?
“What service do you remember, Sāriputta?”
“Sādhu sādhu, sāriputta, kataññuno hi, sāriputta, sappurisā katavedino.
“Good, good, Sāriputta, superior people have gratitude.
Tena hi tvaṁ, sāriputta, taṁ brāhmaṇaṁ pabbājehi upasampādehī”ti.
Well then, Sāriputta, give that brahmin the going forth and the full ordination.”
Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ āmantesi—
The Buddha said to Venerable Sāriputta,
“tena hi tvaṁ, sāriputta, rāhulaṁ kumāraṁ pabbājehī”ti.
“Well then, Sāriputta, give Rāhula the going forth.”
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmato sāriputtassa upaṭṭhākakulaṁ āyasmato sāriputtassa santike dārakaṁ pāhesi—
At this time a family that was supporting Sāriputta sent him a boy with this message:
Atha kho āyasmato sāriputtassa etadahosi—
Sāriputta thought,

Venerable Mahāmoggallāna went to him and asked,
“pubbe te, āvuso sāriputta, kāyaḍāhābādho kena phāsu hotī”ti?
“When you previously had a fever, Sāriputta, how did you get better?”
Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno āyasmato sāriputtassa bhise ca muḷālikāyo ca upanāmesi.
Mahāmoggallāna then brought those lotus roots and tubers to Sāriputta.
Atha kho āyasmato sāriputtassa bhise ca muḷālikāyo ca bhuttassa kāyaḍāhābādho paṭippassambhi.
When he had eaten them, his fever subsided.

On one occasion, Venerable Revata gave a robe to a monk to take to Venerable Sāriputta, saying,

“There are eighteen grounds for knowing that someone is speaking contrary to the Teaching:
Idha, sāriputta, bhikkhu adhammaṁ dhammoti dīpeti,
A monk proclaims what’s contrary to the Teaching as being in accordance with it,
imehi kho, sāriputta, aṭṭhārasahi vatthūhi adhammavādī jānitabbo.
Aṭṭhārasahi ca kho, sāriputta, vatthūhi dhammavādī jānitabbo.
And there are eighteen grounds for knowing that someone is speaking in accordance with the Teaching:
Idha, sāriputta, bhikkhu adhammaṁ adhammoti dīpeti,
A monk proclaims what’s contrary to the Teaching as such,
imehi kho, sāriputta, aṭṭhārasahi vatthūhi dhammavādī jānitabbo”ti.
“Tena hi, sāriputta, vivittaṁ senāsanaṁ dātabban”ti.
“Give them dwellings in a separate place.”
“Tena hi, sāriputta, vivittaṁ katvāpi dātabbaṁ,
“In that case, create separate resting places and then give them out.
na tvevāhaṁ, sāriputta, kenaci pariyāyena vuḍḍhatarassa bhikkhuno senāsanaṁ paṭibāhitabbanti vadāmi.
Under no circumstances, Sāriputta, should a dwelling be reserved for a more senior monk.
“Āmisaṁ kho, sāriputta, sabbesaṁ samakaṁ bhājetabban”ti.
“Food and requisites should be distributed equally to everyone.”

Soon afterwards a sangha of monks, headed by Sāriputta and Moggallāna, went to Kīṭāgiri and did the legal procedure of banishing the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka,

Venerable Mahāmoggallāna went to him and said,
“pubbe te, āvuso sāriputta, udaravātābādho kena phāsu hotī”ti?
“When you had a stomach ache in the past, Sāriputta, what made you better?”

Atha kho bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ yathābhirantaṁ viharitvā yena kīṭāgiri tena cārikaṁ pakkāmi mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sāriputtamoggallānehi ca.
When the Buddha had stayed at Sāvatthī for as long as he liked, he set out wandering toward Kīṭāgiri with a large sangha of five hundred monks, including Sāriputta and Mahāmoggallāna.
“bhagavā kira kīṭāgiriṁ āgacchati mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sāriputtamoggallānehi ca.
Pāpicchā sāriputtamoggallānā, pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gatā;
Sāriputta and Mahāmoggallāna are in the grip of bad desires.
‘bhagavā, āvuso, āgacchati mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sāriputtamoggallānehi ca.
‘The Buddha is coming with a large sangha of five hundred monks, including Sāriputta and Mahāmoggallāna.
Bhagavato ca, āvuso, senāsanaṁ paññapetha, bhikkhusaṅghassa ca, sāriputtamoggallānānañcā’”ti.
Please assign dwellings to the Buddha, to the Sangha of monks, and to Sāriputta and Mahāmoggallāna.’”
“bhagavā, āvuso, āgacchati mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sāriputtamoggallānehi ca.
Bhagavato ca, āvuso, senāsanaṁ paññapetha, bhikkhusaṅghassa ca, sāriputtamoggallānānañcā”ti.
Pāpicchā sāriputtamoggallānā, pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gatā.
But Sāriputta and Mahāmoggallāna are in the grip of bad desires.

sarājikāya maṁ bhagavā parisāya kheḷāsakavādena apasādeti, sāriputtamoggallāneva ukkaṁsatīti—
“The Buddha disparages me in front of a gathering that includes the king as a devourer of junk, while praising Sāriputta and Mogallāna,”
Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ āmantesi—
The Buddha then addressed Sāriputta:
“tena hi tvaṁ, sāriputta, devadattaṁ rājagahe pakāsehī”ti.
“Well then, Sāriputta, make that announcement about Devadatta in Rājagaha.”
“Nanu tayā, sāriputta, bhūtoyeva devadattassa rājagahe vaṇṇo bhāsito—
“Didn’t you praise him truthfully
“Evameva kho tvaṁ, sāriputta, bhūtaṁyeva devadattaṁ rājagahe pakāsehī”ti.
“In the same way, you should make this announcement truthfully.”
“tena hi, bhikkhave, saṅgho sāriputtaṁ sammannatu devadattaṁ rājagahe pakāsetuṁ—
“Well then, the Sangha should appoint Sāriputta to make that announcement about Devadatta in Rājagaha.
Yadi saṅghassa pattakallaṁ, saṅgho āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ sammanneyya devadattaṁ rājagahe pakāsetuṁ—
If the Sangha is ready, it should appoint Venerable Sāriputta to make an announcement about Devadatta in Rājagaha like this:
Saṅgho āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ sammannati devadattaṁ rājagahe pakāsetuṁ—

Yassāyasmato khamati, āyasmato sāriputtassa sammuti devadattaṁ rājagahe pakāsetuṁ—
Any monk who approves of appointing Venerable Sāriputta in this way
Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu.
Soon afterwards Sāriputta and Moggallāna went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down,
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho sāriputtamoggallānā bhagavato paṭissutvā uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā yena gayāsīsaṁ tenupasaṅkamiṁsu.
Saying, “Yes, Sir,” they got up from their seats, bowed down, circumambulated the Buddha with their right sides toward him, and went to Gayāsīsa.
“Yepi te, bhante, bhagavato aggasāvakā sāriputtamoggallānā tepi devadattassa santike gacchanti devadattassa dhammaṁ rocentā”ti.
He said, “Sir, even Sāriputta and Moggallāna, the Buddha’s chief disciples, are going to Devadatta because they approve of his teaching.”
“Aṭṭhānametaṁ, bhikkhu, anavakāso, yaṁ sāriputtamoggallānā devadattassa dhammaṁ roceyyuṁ, api ca te gatā bhikkhūnaṁ saññattiyā”ti.
“It’s impossible for Sāriputta and Moggallāna to approve of Devadatta’s teaching. In fact, they’ve gone to win those monks over.”
Addasā kho devadatto sāriputtamoggallāne dūratova āgacchante.
When Devadatta saw Sāriputta and Moggallāna coming,
“passatha, bhikkhave, yāva svākkhāto mayā dhammo, yepi te samaṇassa gotamassa aggasāvakā sāriputtamoggallānā tepi mama santike āgacchanti.
“See how well-taught my teaching is, in that even Sāriputta and Moggallāna, the ascetic Gotama’s chief disciples, are coming here
“mā, āvuso devadatta, sāriputtamoggallāne vissasi.
“Don’t trust Sāriputta and Moggallāna.
Pāpicchā sāriputtamoggallānā, pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gatā”ti.
They have bad desires. They’re in the grip of bad desires.”
Atha kho devadatto āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ upaḍḍhāsanena nimantesi—
Devadatta invited Venerable Sāriputta
“ehāvuso sāriputta, idha nisīdāhī”ti.
to sit on a seat half the height of his own.
Atha kho devadatto bahudeva rattiṁ bhikkhū dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṁsetvā āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ ajjhesi—
After spending most of the night instructing, inspiring, and gladdening the monks with a teaching, Devadatta invited Sāriputta, saying
“vigatathinamiddho kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhusaṅgho.
“The Sangha of monks is without dullness and drowsiness.
Paṭibhātu taṁ, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhūnaṁ dhammī kathā, piṭṭhi me āgilāyati, tamahaṁ āyamissāmī”ti.
Give a teaching, Sāriputta. My back is aching. I need to stretch it.”
Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānā tāni pañcabhikkhusatāni ādāya yena veḷuvanaṁ tenupasaṅkamiṁsu.
Sāriputta and Moggallāna then went to the Bamboo Grove accompanied by those five hundred monks.
“uṭṭhehi, āvuso devadatta, nītā te bhikkhū sāriputtamoggallānehi.
“Get up, Devadatta, your monks are being led away by Sāriputta and Moggallāna.
‘mā, āvuso devadatta, sāriputtamoggallāne vissāsi.
not to trust Sāriputta and Moggallāna?
Pāpicchā sāriputtamoggallānā, pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gatā’”ti?
Didn’t I say that they have bad desires, that they are in the grip of bad desires?”
Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdisuṁ.
Sāriputta and Moggallāna then went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down,
“Alaṁ, sāriputta.
“Let it be, Sāriputta,
Tena hi tvaṁ, sāriputta, bhedakānuvattake bhikkhū thullaccayaṁ desāpehi.
Instead, have them confess a serious offense.
Kathaṁ pana te, sāriputta, devadatto paṭipajjī”ti?
And Devadatta, how did he treat you?”
‘vigatathinamiddho kho, sāriputta, bhikkhusaṅgho;
‘The Sangha of monks is without dullness and drowsiness.
paṭibhātu taṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhūnaṁ dhammī kathā, piṭṭhi me āgilāyati, tamahaṁ āyamissāmī’ti.
Give a teaching, Sāriputta. My back is aching. I need to stretch it,’

the other monks left, leaving Sāriputta behind by himself.
Addasā kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ dūratova ekakaṁ āgacchantaṁ.
The Buddha saw him coming
Disvāna āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ etadavoca—
and asked,
“kacci, sāriputta, bhattaṁ iddhaṁ ahosī”ti?
“Did the meal go well?”
