“Ekadhammo, bhikkhave, bhāvito bahulīkato paññāpaṭilābhāya saṁvattati … paññāvuddhiyā saṁvattati … paññāvepullāya saṁvattati … mahāpaññatāya saṁvattati … puthupaññatāya saṁvattati … vipulapaññatāya saṁvattati … gambhīrapaññatāya saṁvattati … asāmantapaññatāya saṁvattati … bhūripaññatāya saṁvattati … paññābāhullāya saṁvattati … sīghapaññatāya saṁvattati … lahupaññatāya saṁvattati … hāsapaññatāya saṁvattati … javanapaññatāya saṁvattati … tikkhapaññatāya saṁvattati … nibbedhikapaññatāya saṁvattati.  “One thing, mendicants, when developed and cultivated, leads to the getting of wisdom … the growth of wisdom … the increase of wisdom … to great wisdom … to widespread wisdom … to abundant wisdom … to deep wisdom … to extraordinary wisdom … to vast wisdom … to much wisdom … to fast wisdom … to light wisdom … to laughing wisdom … to swift wisdom … to sharp wisdom … to penetrating wisdom.

This one thing, when developed and cultivated, leads to the getting of wisdom … the growth of wisdom … the increase of wisdom … to great wisdom … to widespread wisdom … to abundant wisdom … to deep wisdom … to extraordinary wisdom … to vast wisdom … to much wisdom … to fast wisdom … to light wisdom … to laughing wisdom … to swift wisdom … to sharp wisdom … to penetrating wisdom.” 

Evaṁ vutte, ārāmadaṇḍo brāhmaṇo uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā dakkhiṇaṁ jāṇumaṇḍalaṁ pathaviyaṁ nihantvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṁ udānaṁ udānesi:  When this was said, the brahmin Ārāmadaṇḍa got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and expressed this heartfelt sentiment three times: 

Yo ca phusī jātikkhayaṁ padhānavā;  one who strives reaches the end of rebirth. 

Asekkhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena samādhikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena paññākkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena vimuttikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti;  The entire spectrum of an adept’s ethics, immersion, wisdom, freedom, and knowledge and vision of freedom. 

Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto,  and has attained the ending of rebirth,

Atha kho bhagavā sippinikātīre paribbājakārāme tikkhattuṁ sīhanādaṁ naditvā vehāsaṁ pakkāmi.  Then the Buddha, having roared his lion’s roar three times in the wanderers’ monastery on the bank of the Sappinī river, rose into the air and flew away. 

Aparipūrassa kho ahaṁ vimuttikkhandhassa pāripūriyā aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ.  I would honor and respect and rely on another ascetic or brahmin so as to complete the entire spectrum of freedom, if it were incomplete. 

Samantā catuddisā anuviloketvā tikkhattuṁ sīhanādaṁ nadati.  and roars his lion’s roar three times. 
Tikkhattuṁ sīhanādaṁ naditvā gocarāya pakkamati. 
Then he sets out on the hunt.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asekhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena samādhikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena paññākkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena vimuttikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti.  It’s when they have the entire spectrum of the adept’s ethics, immersion, wisdom, freedom, and knowledge and vision of freedom.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asekhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti; asekhena samādhikkhandhena … asekhena paññākkhandhena … asekhena vimuttikkhandhena … asekhena vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti.  It’s a mendicant who has the entire spectrum of an adept’s ethics, immersion, wisdom, freedom, and the knowledge and vision of freedom. 

Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, bhikkhū appamattā viharanti tikkhaṁ maraṇassatiṁ bhāventi āsavānaṁ khayāya.  these are called mendicants who live diligently. They keenly develop mindfulness of death for the ending of defilements. 
‘appamattā viharissāma, tikkhaṁ maraṇassatiṁ bhāvessāma āsavānaṁ khayāyā’ti. 
‘We will live diligently. We will keenly develop mindfulness of death for the ending of defilements.’ 

Aduṭṭhacittā patino titikkhati;  Without hate or anger, 

ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, ‘bhikkhū appamattā viharanti, tikkhaṁ maraṇassatiṁ bhāventi āsavānaṁ khayāya’.  These are called mendicants who live diligently. They keenly develop mindfulness of death for the ending of defilements.

Te taṁ rattiṁ tikkhattuṁ paccuṭṭhāya pañjalikā aggiṁ namassanti:  That night they rise three times and worship the fire with joined palms:

Atha kho āyasmā mahākassapo yena kusinārā makuṭabandhanaṁ nāma mallānaṁ cetiyaṁ, yena bhagavato citako tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekaṁsaṁ cīvaraṁ katvā añjaliṁ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṁ citakaṁ padakkhiṇaṁ katvā bhagavato pāde sirasā vandi.  Then Venerable Mahākassapa arrived at the Mallian shrine named Coronation at Kusinārā and approached the Buddha’s funeral pyre. Arranging his robe over one shoulder and raising his joined palms, he respectfully circled the Buddha three times, keeping him on his right, and bowed with his head at the Buddha’s feet. 
Tānipi kho pañcabhikkhusatāni ekaṁsaṁ cīvaraṁ katvā añjaliṁ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṁ citakaṁ padakkhiṇaṁ katvā bhagavato pāde sirasā vandiṁsu. 
And the five hundred mendicants did likewise. 

Atha kho sakko devānamindo pāṇinā pathaviṁ parāmasitvā tikkhattuṁ udānaṁ udānesi:  Then Sakka, touching the ground with his hand, expressed this heartfelt sentiment three times: 

‘tena hi, bho, tassa purisassa kāyaṁ paṇḍumattikāya tikkhattuṁ subbaṭṭitaṁ ubbaṭṭethā’ti.  carefully scrub that man’s body down with pale clay three times, 
Te tassa purisassa kāyaṁ paṇḍumattikāya tikkhattuṁ subbaṭṭitaṁ ubbaṭṭeyyuṁ. 
and they’d do so. 
‘tena hi, bho, taṁ purisaṁ telena abbhañjitvā sukhumena cuṇṇena tikkhattuṁ suppadhotaṁ karothā’ti. 
smear that man’s body with oil, and carefully wash him down with fine paste three times, 
Te taṁ purisaṁ telena abbhañjitvā sukhumena cuṇṇena tikkhattuṁ suppadhotaṁ kareyyuṁ. 
and they’d do so. 
So yena aññataro gāmo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā majjhe gāmassa ṭhito tikkhattuṁ saṅkhaṁ upalāpetvā saṅkhaṁ bhūmiyaṁ nikkhipitvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. 
where he went to a certain village. Standing in the middle of the village, he sounded his horn three times, then placed it on the ground and sat down to one side. 
Tesaṁ pekkhamānānaṁ saṅkhaṁ gahetvā tikkhattuṁ saṅkhaṁ upalāpetvā saṅkhaṁ ādāya pakkāmi. 
And as they looked on, he picked up the horn, sounded it three times, and took it away with him. 

Atha kho, bhaggava, sunakkhatto licchaviputto yena bīraṇatthambakaṁ susānaṁ, yena acelo korakkhattiyo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā acelaṁ korakkhattiyaṁ tikkhattuṁ pāṇinā ākoṭesi:  So he went to see the aristocrat of Kuru in the charnel ground on the clump of vetiver. There he struck him with his fist three times, 
Tatrāsayaṁ kappetvā sāyanhasamayaṁ āsayā nikkhameyyaṁ, āsayā nikkhamitvā vijambheyyaṁ, vijambhitvā samantā catuddisā anuvilokeyyaṁ, samantā catuddisā anuviloketvā tikkhattuṁ sīhanādaṁ nadeyyaṁ, tikkhattuṁ sīhanādaṁ naditvā gocarāya pakkameyyaṁ. 
Towards evening I can emerge from my den, yawn, look all around the four quarters, roar my lion’s roar three times, and set out on the hunt. 
Tatrāsayaṁ kappetvā sāyanhasamayaṁ āsayā nikkhami, āsayā nikkhamitvā vijambhi, vijambhitvā samantā catuddisā anuvilokesi, samantā catuddisā anuviloketvā tikkhattuṁ sīhanādaṁ nadi, tikkhattuṁ sīhanādaṁ naditvā gocarāya pakkāmi.

But when he tried to roar a lion’s roar, he only managed to squeal and yelp like a jackal. And what is a pathetic jackal’s squeal next to the roar of a lion? 

‘mayaṁ kho akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ samādānahetu evarūpaṁ āyataṁ ñātikkhayaṁ pattā.  ‘It’s because we undertook unskillful things that we suffered such an extensive loss of our relatives. 

Mahāpañño hoti puthupañño hāsapañño javanapañño tikkhapañño nibbedhikapañño, nāssa hoti koci paññāya sadiso vā seṭṭho vā sabbasattānaṁ.  He has great wisdom, widespread wisdom, laughing wisdom, swift wisdom, sharp wisdom, and penetrating wisdom. No sentient being is his equal or better in wisdom. 

sīlakkhandho, samādhikkhandho, paññākkhandho, vimuttikkhandho.  ethics, immersion, wisdom, and freedom.

Evaṁ vutte, jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo sabbasetā vaḷavābhirathā orohitvā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṁ udānaṁ udānesi:  When he had spoken, Jānussoṇi got down from his chariot, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and expressed this heartfelt sentiment three times: 

Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṁ udānaṁ udānesi:  Then King Pasenadi got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and expressed this heartfelt sentiment three times: 

Dvattikkhattuṁ kho bhavaṁ gotamo mukhe ālopaṁ samparivattetvā ajjhoharati;  He chews over each portion two or three times before swallowing. 
Evaṁ vutte, brahmāyu brāhmaṇo uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṁ udānaṁ udāneti: 
When he had spoken, the brahmin Brahmāyu got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and uttered this aphorism three times: 
Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto, 
and has attained the end of rebirth: 

aduṭṭho yo titikkhati;  they endure these without anger. 
Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto, 
and have attained the end of rebirth: 

Atha kho dhanañjānī brāhmaṇī upakkhalitvā tikkhattuṁ udānaṁ udānesi:  Once, she tripped and expressed this heartfelt sentiment three times: 

tikkhapañño, bhikkhave, sāriputto;  sharp wisdom, 

“Imehi pana te, āvuso bākula, asītiyā vassehi katikkhattuṁ methuno dhammo paṭisevito”ti?  “But in these eighty years, how many times have you had sex?” 
‘imehi pana te, āvuso bākula, asītiyā vassehi katikkhattuṁ methuno dhammo paṭisevito’ti. 
 
‘imehi pana te, āvuso bākula, asītiyā vassehi katikkhattuṁ kāmasaññā uppannapubbā’”ti? 
‘But in these eighty years, how many times have sensual perceptions ever arisen in you?’”

Mahāpañño, bhante, puthupañño, bhante, hāsapañño, bhante, javanapañño, bhante, tikkhapañño, bhante, nibbedhikapañño, bhante, appiccho, bhante, santuṭṭho, bhante, pavivitto, bhante, asaṁsaṭṭho, bhante, āraddhavīriyo, bhante, vattā, bhante, vacanakkhamo, bhante, codako, bhante, pāpagarahī, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. 
 
mahāpañño āyasmā, puthupañño āyasmā, hāsapañño āyasmā, javanapañño āyasmā, tikkhapañño āyasmā, nibbedhikapañño āyasmā, appiccho āyasmā, santuṭṭho āyasmā, pavivitto āyasmā, asaṁsaṭṭho āyasmā, āraddhavīriyo āyasmā, vattā āyasmā, vacanakkhamo āyasmā, codako āyasmā, pāpagarahī āyasmā sāriputto’ti. 
 

Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā dakkhiṇajāṇumaṇḍalaṁ pathaviyaṁ nihantvā yena te satta ca jaṭilā satta ca nigaṇṭhā satta ca acelakā satta ca ekasāṭakā satta ca paribbājakā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṁ nāmaṁ sāvesi:  Then King Pasenadi got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, knelt with his right knee on the ground, raised his joined palms toward those various ascetics, and pronounced his name three times: 

Asekkhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena samādhikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena paññākkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena vimuttikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti.  The entire spectrum of an adept’s ethics, immersion, wisdom, freedom, and knowledge and vision of freedom.

Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto,  and has attained the ending of rebirth, 

Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto,  and has attained the ending of rebirth, 

Paṇḍito tvaṁ, sāriputta, mahāpañño tvaṁ, sāriputta, puthupañño tvaṁ, sāriputta, hāsapañño tvaṁ, sāriputta, javanapañño tvaṁ, sāriputta, tikkhapañño tvaṁ, sāriputta, nibbedhikapañño tvaṁ, sāriputta.  Sāriputta, you are astute. You have great wisdom, widespread wisdom, laughing wisdom, swift wisdom, sharp wisdom, penetrating wisdom. 

Rattiyā sudaṁ tikkhattuṁ vuṭṭhāsi pabhātanti maññamāno.  During the night he got up three times thinking it was morning. 

dubbalyā no titikkhasi;  is it from fear or from weakness 
bhayā myāyaṁ titikkhati; 
“He puts up with me out of fear,” 
bhayā myāyaṁ titikkhati; 
“He puts up with me out of fear.” 
dubbalassa titikkhati; 
puts up with a weakling, 

bhayā myāyaṁ titikkhati;  “He puts up with me out of fear,” 
bhayā myāyaṁ titikkhati; 
“He puts up with me out of fear.” 
dubbalassa titikkhati; 
puts up with a weakling, 

Atha kho, bhikkhave, sambaro asurindo tehi isīhi sīlavantehi kalyāṇadhammehi abhisapito rattiyā sudaṁ tikkhattuṁ ubbijjī”ti.  But after being cursed by the seers, Sambara woke in alarm three times that night.” 

Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo yena so kodhabhakkho yakkho tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā dakkhiṇajāṇumaṇḍalaṁ pathaviyaṁ nihantvā yena so kodhabhakkho yakkho tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṁ nāmaṁ sāveti:  Then Sakka went up to that spirit, arranged his robe over one shoulder, knelt with his right knee on the ground, raised his joined palms toward the anger-eating spirit, and pronounced his name three times: 

“Sīho, bhikkhave, migarājā sāyanhasamayaṁ āsayā nikkhamati; āsayā nikkhamitvā vijambhati; vijambhitvā samantā catuddisā anuviloketi; samantā catuddisā anuviloketvā tikkhattuṁ sīhanādaṁ nadati; tikkhattuṁ sīhanādaṁ naditvā gocarāya pakkamati.  “Mendicants, towards evening the lion, king of beasts, emerges from his den, yawns, looks all around the four quarters, and roars his lion’s roar three times. Then he sets out on the hunt. 

“Kiṁ nu kho te, ānanda, sāriputto sīlakkhandhaṁ vā ādāya parinibbuto, samādhikkhandhaṁ vā ādāya parinibbuto, paññākkhandhaṁ vā ādāya parinibbuto, vimuttikkhandhaṁ vā ādāya parinibbuto, vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhaṁ vā ādāya parinibbuto”ti?  “Well, Ānanda, when Sāriputta was fully quenched, did he take away your entire spectrum of ethical conduct, of immersion, of wisdom, of freedom, or of the knowledge and vision of freedom?”
