So dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ anabhihiṁsamāno vitakkavicārānaṁ vūpasamā … dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.

Brāhmaṇakulā cepi …pe… vessakulā cepi …pe… suddakulā cepi …pe… yasmā kasmā cepi kulā agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajito hoti, so ca tathāgatappaveditaṁ dhammavinayaṁ āgamma, evaṁ mettaṁ karuṇaṁ muditaṁ upekkhaṁ bhāvetvā labhati ajjhattaṁ vūpasamaṁ.  In the same way, suppose someone has gone forth from the lay life to homelessness—whether from a family of aristocrats, brahmins, peasants, or menials—and has arrived at the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One. Having developed love, compassion, rejoicing, and equanimity in this way they gain inner peace. 
Ajjhattaṁ vūpasamā ‘samaṇasāmīcippaṭipadaṁ paṭipanno’ti vadāmi. 
Because of that inner peace they are practicing the way proper for an ascetic, I say.

Dhammanettiṁ samanumajjitvā yathā tattha sameti tathā taṁ adhikaraṇaṁ vūpasametabbaṁ. 
They should settle that disciplinary issue in agreement with the guidelines. 
evañca panidhekaccānaṁ adhikaraṇānaṁ vūpasamo hoti yadidaṁ— 
And that’s how certain disciplinary issues are settled, that is, 
Te ce, ānanda, bhikkhū na sakkonti taṁ adhikaraṇaṁ tasmiṁ āvāse vūpasametuṁ. 
If those mendicants are not able to settle that issue in that monastery, 
Dhammanettiṁ samanumajjitvā yathā tattha sameti tathā taṁ adhikaraṇaṁ vūpasametabbaṁ. 
They should settle that disciplinary issue in agreement with the guidelines. 
Evaṁ kho, ānanda, yebhuyyasikā hoti, evañca panidhekaccānaṁ adhikaraṇānaṁ vūpasamo hoti yadidaṁ— 
That’s how there is majority decision. And that’s how certain disciplinary issues are settled, that is, 
Evaṁ kho, ānanda, sativinayo hoti, evañca panidhekaccānaṁ adhikaraṇānaṁ vūpasamo hoti yadidaṁ— 
That’s how there is the resolution through recollection. And that’s how certain disciplinary issues are settled, that is, 
Evaṁ kho, ānanda, amūḷhavinayo hoti, evañca panidhekaccānaṁ adhikaraṇānaṁ vūpasamo hoti yadidaṁ— 
That’s how there is resolution because of past insanity. And that’s how certain disciplinary issues are settled, that is, 
Evaṁ kho, ānanda, paṭiññātakaraṇaṁ hoti, evañca panidhekaccānaṁ adhikaraṇānaṁ vūpasamo hoti yadidaṁ— 
That’s how there is acting according to what has been admitted. And that’s how certain disciplinary issues are settled, that is, 
Evaṁ kho, ānanda, tassapāpiyasikā hoti, evañca panidhekaccānaṁ adhikaraṇānaṁ vūpasamo hoti yadidaṁ— 
That’s how there is further penalty. And that’s how certain disciplinary issues are settled, that is, 
Evaṁ kho, ānanda, tiṇavatthārako hoti, evañca panidhekaccānaṁ adhikaraṇānaṁ vūpasamo hoti yadidaṁ— 
That’s how there is the covering over as if with grass. And that’s how certain disciplinary issues are settled, that is,

‘Tasseva dukkhavedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā yaṁ tajjaṁ vedayitaṁ dukkhavedaniyaṁ phassaṁ paṭicca uppannā dukkhā vedanā sā nirujjhati, sā vūpasammatī’ti pajānāti.

“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, gimhānaṁ pacchime māse ūhataṁ rajojallaṁ, tamenaṁ mahāakālamegho ṭhānaso antaradhāpeti vūpasameti;  “Mendicants, in the last month of summer, when the dust and dirt is stirred up, a large sudden storm disperses and settles it on the spot. 
evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvento ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkaronto uppannuppanne pāpake akusale dhamme ṭhānaso antaradhāpeti vūpasameti. 
In the same way, a mendicant who develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path disperses and stills bad, unskillful qualities on the spot. 
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvento ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkaronto uppannuppanne pāpake akusale dhamme ṭhānaso antaradhāpeti vūpasameti? 
How does a mendicant who develops the noble eightfold path disperse and still bad, unskillful qualities on the spot? 
evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvento ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkaronto uppannuppanne pāpake akusale dhamme ṭhānaso antaradhāpeti vūpasametī”ti. 
That’s how a mendicant who develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path disperses and stills bad, unskillful qualities on the spot.”

In the same way, a mendicant who develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path disperses and stills bad, unskillful qualities as they proceed. 
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvento ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkaronto uppannuppanne pāpake akusale dhamme antarāyeva antaradhāpeti vūpasameti?

Vitakkavicārānaṁ vūpasamā ajjhattaṁ sampasādanaṁ cetaso ekodibhāvaṁ avitakkaṁ avicāraṁ samādhijaṁ pītisukhaṁ dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.  As the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, they enter and remain in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.

Tasseva sukhavedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā ‘yaṁ tajjaṁ vedayitaṁ sukhavedaniyaṁ phassaṁ paṭicca uppannaṁ sukhindriyaṁ taṁ nirujjhati, taṁ vūpasammatī’ti pajānāti.  With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as pleasant, you understand that the corresponding faculty of pleasure ceases and stops. 
Tasseva dukkhavedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā ‘yaṁ tajjaṁ vedayitaṁ dukkhavedaniyaṁ phassaṁ paṭicca uppannaṁ dukkhindriyaṁ taṁ nirujjhati, taṁ vūpasammatī’ti pajānāti. 
With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as painful, you understand that the corresponding faculty of pain ceases and stops. 
Tasseva somanassavedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā ‘yaṁ tajjaṁ vedayitaṁ somanassavedaniyaṁ phassaṁ paṭicca uppannaṁ somanassindriyaṁ taṁ nirujjhati, taṁ vūpasammatī’ti pajānāti. 
With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as happiness, you understand that the corresponding faculty of happiness ceases and stops. 
Tasseva domanassavedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā ‘yaṁ tajjaṁ vedayitaṁ domanassavedaniyaṁ phassaṁ paṭicca uppannaṁ domanassindriyaṁ taṁ nirujjhati, taṁ vūpasammatī’ti pajānāti. 
With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as sadness, you understand that the corresponding faculty of sadness ceases and stops. 
Tasseva upekkhāvedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā ‘yaṁ tajjaṁ vedayitaṁ upekkhāvedaniyaṁ phassaṁ paṭicca uppannaṁ upekkhindriyaṁ taṁ nirujjhati, taṁ vūpasammatī’ti pajānāti. 
With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as equanimous, you understand that the corresponding faculty of equanimity ceases and stops. 
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, dvinnaṁ kaṭṭhānaṁ saṅghaṭṭanasamodhānā usmā jāyati, tejo abhinibbattati; tesaṁyeva kaṭṭhānaṁ nānābhāvāvinikkhepā yā tajjā usmā sā nirujjhati sā vūpasammati; 
When you rub two sticks together, heat is generated and fire is produced. But when you part the sticks and lay them aside, any corresponding heat ceases and stops. 
Tasseva sukhavedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā ‘yaṁ tajjaṁ vedayitaṁ sukhavedaniyaṁ phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati sukhindriyaṁ taṁ nirujjhati, taṁ vūpasammatī’ti pajānāti. 
With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as pleasant, you understand that the corresponding faculty of pleasure ceases and stops. 
Tasseva upekkhāvedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā ‘yaṁ tajjaṁ vedayitaṁ upekkhāvedaniyaṁ phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati upekkhindriyaṁ taṁ nirujjhati, taṁ vūpasammatī’ti pajānāti”.

And it disperses and settles unskillful qualities on the spot whenever they arise. 
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, gimhānaṁ pacchime māse ūhataṁ rajojallaṁ, tamenaṁ mahāakālamegho ṭhānaso antaradhāpeti vūpasameti; 
In the last month of summer, when the dust and dirt is stirred up, a large sudden storm disperses and settles it on the spot. 
evameva kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhi bhāvito bahulīkato santo ceva paṇīto ca asecanako ca sukho ca vihāro uppannuppanne ca pāpake akusale dhamme ṭhānaso antaradhāpeti vūpasameti.
