173. Non-Dhamma (3)

1"Bhikkhus, what is non-Dhamma and what is the Dhamma should be understood, and what is harmful and what is beneficial should also be understood. Having understood what is non-Dhamma and what is the Dhamma, and also what is harmful and what is beneficial, one should practice in accordance with the Dhamma and with what is beneficial.

1"Adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca; anattho ca veditabbo attho ca. Adhammañca viditvā dhammañca, anatthañca viditvā atthañca yathā dhammo yathā attho tathā paṭipajjitabbaṁ.



2"And what, bhikkhus, is non-Dhamma and what is the Dhamma? And what is harmful and what is beneficial?

2Katamo ca, bhikkhave, adhammo, katamo ca dhammo; katamo ca anattho, katamo ca attho?

(1) "The destruction of life is non-Dhamma; abstention from the destruction of life is the Dhamma. The numerous bad unwholesome qualities that originate with the destruction of life as condition: these are harmful. The numerous wholesome qualities that reach fulfillment by development with abstention from the destruction of life as condition: these are beneficial.

Pāṇātipāto, bhikkhave, adhammo; pāṇātipātā veramaṇī dhammo; ye ca pāṇātipātapaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaṁ anattho; pāṇātipātā veramaṇipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, ayaṁ attho.

3(2) "Taking what is not given is non-Dhamma; abstention from taking what is not given is the Dhamma …. (3) Sexual misconduct is non-Dhamma; abstention from sexual misconduct is the Dhamma …. (4) False speech is non-Dhamma; abstention from false speech is the Dhamma …. (5) Divisive speech is non-Dhamma; abstention from divisive speech is the Dhamma ….(6) Harsh speech is non-Dhamma; abstention from harsh speech is the Dhamma ….(7) Idle chatter is non-Dhamma; abstention from idle chatter is the Dhamma ….(8) Longing is non-Dhamma; non-longing is the Dhamma ….(9) Ill will is non-Dhamma; good will is the Dhamma ….

3Adinnādānaṁ, bhikkhave, adhammo; adinnādānā veramaṇī dhammo … kāmesumicchācāro, bhikkhave, adhammo; kāmesumicchācārā veramaṇī dhammo … musāvādo, bhikkhave, adhammo; musāvādā veramaṇī dhammo … pisuṇā vācā, bhikkhave, adhammo; pisuṇāya vācāya veramaṇī dhammo … pharusā vācā, bhikkhave, adhammo; pharusāya vācāya veramaṇī dhammo … samphappalāpo, bhikkhave, adhammo; samphappalāpā veramaṇī dhammo … abhijjhā, bhikkhave, adhammo; anabhijjhā dhammo … byāpādo, bhikkhave, adhammo; abyāpādo dhammo ….



4(10) "Wrong view is non-Dhamma; right view is the Dhamma. The numerous bad unwholesome qualities that originate with wrong view as condition: these are harmful. The numerous wholesome qualities that reach fulfillment by development with right view as condition: these are beneficial.

4Micchādiṭṭhi, bhikkhave, adhammo; sammādiṭṭhi dhammo; ye ca micchādiṭṭhipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaṁ anattho; sammādiṭṭhipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, ayaṁ attho.

5"When it was said: ‘Bhikkhus, what is non-Dhamma and what is the Dhamma should be understood, and what is harmful and what is beneficial should be understood. Having understood what is non-Dhamma and what is the Dhamma, and what is harmful and what is beneficial, one should practice in accordance with the Dhamma and with what is beneficial,’ it is with reference to this that this was said."

5‘Adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca; anattho ca veditabbo attho ca. Adhammañca viditvā dhammañca, anatthañca viditvā atthañca yathā dhammo yathā attho tathā paṭipajjitabban’ti, iti yaṁ taṁ vuttaṁ, idametaṁ paṭicca vuttan"ti.
