- DG BB TBW © Translated from the Pali by Bhikkhu Bodhi (More copyright information)
1"Bhikkhus, the spiritual life is lived for the abandoning and eradication of five kinds of miserliness. What five? Miserliness with regard to dwellings, miserliness with regard to families, miserliness with regard to gains, miserliness with regard to praise, and miserliness with regard to the Dhamma. The spiritual life is lived for the abandoning and eradication of these five kinds of miserliness."
1"Pañcannaṁ, bhikkhave, macchariyānaṁ pahānāya samucchedāya brahmacariyaṁ vussati. Katamesaṁ pañcannaṁ? Āvāsamacchariyassa pahānāya samucchedāya brahmacariyaṁ vussati; kulamacchariyassa … lābhamacchariyassa … vaṇṇamacchariyassa … dhammamacchariyassa pahānāya samucchedāya brahmacariyaṁ vussati. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ macchariyānaṁ pahānāya samucchedāya brahmacariyaṁ vussatī"ti.
