5: The Book of the Fives

257–263. Second Jhāna, Etc.

1"Bhikkhus, without having abandoned these five things one is incapable of entering and dwelling in the second jhāna … the third jhāna … the fourth jhāna … one is incapable of realizing the fruit of stream-entry … the fruit of once-returning … the fruit of non-returning … the fruit of arahantship. What five? Miserliness with regard to dwellings … miserliness with regard to the Dhamma. Without having abandoned these five things, one is incapable of realizing the fruit of arahantship.

2"Bhikkhus, having abandoned these five things, one is capable of entering and dwelling in the second jhāna … the third jhāna … the fourth jhāna … one is capable of realizing the fruit of stream-entry … the fruit of once-returning … the fruit of non-returning … the fruit of arahantship. What five? Miserliness with regard to dwellings … miserliness with regard to the Dhamma. Having abandoned these five things, one is capable of realizing the fruit of arahantship."

1"Pañcime, bhikkhave, dhamme appahāya abhabbo dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ … pe … abhabbo tatiyaṁ jhānaṁ … abhabbo catutthaṁ jhānaṁ … abhabbo sotāpattiphalaṁ … abhabbo sakadāgāmiphalaṁ … abhabbo anāgāmiphalaṁ … abhabbo arahattaṁ sacchikātuṁ. Katame pañca? Āvāsamacchariyaṁ, kulamacchariyaṁ, lābhamacchariyaṁ, vaṇṇamacchariyaṁ, dhammamacchariyaṁ. Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca dhamme appahāya abhabbo arahattaṁ sacchikātuṁ.

2Pañcime, bhikkhave, dhamme pahāya bhabbo dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ … pe … bhabbo tatiyaṁ jhānaṁ … bhabbo catutthaṁ jhānaṁ … bhabbo sotāpattiphalaṁ … bhabbo sakadāgāmiphalaṁ … bhabbo anāgāmiphalaṁ … bhabbo arahattaṁ sacchikātuṁ.
