1Then Ugga the king's chief minister approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, sat down to one side, and said:

2"It's astounding and amazing, Bhante, how Migāra of Rohaṇa is so rich, with such great wealth and property."

"But how rich is Migāra of Rohaṇa? How much wealth and property does he have?"

"He has a hundred thousand units of minted gold, [n.1456] I follow Ce, which reads sataṁ bhante sahassānaṁ. Be and Ee have sataṁ bhante satasahassānaṁ, "a hundred (times) a hundred thousand." not to mention silver."

"There is that kind of wealth, Ugga; this I don’t deny. But that kind of wealth can be taken away by fire, water, kings, thieves, and displeasing heirs. However, Ugga, these seven kinds of wealth cannot be taken away by fire, water, kings, thieves, and displeasing heirs. What seven? The wealth of faith, the wealth of virtuous behavior, the wealth of moral shame, the wealth of moral dread, the wealth of learning, the wealth of generosity, and the wealth of wisdom. These seven kinds of wealth cannot be taken away by fire, water, kings, thieves, and displeasing heirs."

3The wealth of faith, the wealth of virtuous behavior,
the wealth of moral shame and moral dread,
the wealth of learning and generosity,
with wisdom, the seventh kind of wealth:

4when one has these seven kinds of wealth,
whether a woman or a man,
they say that one is not poor,
that one's life is not lived in vain.

5Therefore an intelligent person,
remembering the Buddhas’ teaching,
should be intent on faith and virtuous behavior,
confidence and vision of the Dhamma.

1Atha kho uggo rājamahāmatto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho uggo rājamahāmatto bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

2"Acchariyaṁ, bhante, abbhutaṁ, bhante. Yāva aḍḍho cāyaṁ, bhante, migāro rohaṇeyyo yāva mahaddhano yāva mahābhogo"ti.

"Kīva aḍḍho panugga, migāro rohaṇeyyo, kīva mahaddhano, kīva mahābhogo"ti?

"Sataṁ, bhante, satasahassānaṁ hiraññassa, ko pana vādo rūpiyassā"ti.

"Atthi kho etaṁ, ugga, dhanaṁ netaṁ ‘natthī’ti vadāmīti. Tañca kho etaṁ, ugga, dhanaṁ sādhāraṇaṁ agginā udakena rājūhi corehi appiyehi dāyādehi. Satta kho imāni, ugga, dhanāni asādhāraṇāni agginā udakena rājūhi corehi appiyehi dāyādehi. Katamāni satta? Saddhādhanaṁ, sīladhanaṁ, hirīdhanaṁ, ottappadhanaṁ, sutadhanaṁ, cāgadhanaṁ, paññādhanaṁ. Imāni kho, ugga, satta dhanāni asādhāraṇāni agginā udakena rājūhi corehi appiyehi dāyādehīti.

3Saddhādhanaṁ sīladhanaṁ,
hirī ottappiyaṁ dhanaṁ;
Sutadhanañca cāgo ca,
paññā ve sattamaṁ dhanaṁ.

4Yassa ete dhanā atthi,
itthiyā purisassa vā;
Sa ve mahaddhano loke,
ajeyyo devamānuse.

5Tasmā saddhañca sīlañca,
pasādaṁ dhammadassanaṁ;
Anuyuñjetha medhāvī,
saraṁ buddhāna sāsanan"ti.
