1"Bhikkhus, there are these five hindrances. What five? The hindrance of sensual desire, the hindrance of ill will, the hindrance of dullness and drowsiness, the hindrance of restlessness and remorse, and the hindrance of doubt.

2These are the five hindrances …. These four establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for abandoning these five hindrances."

1"Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, nīvaraṇāni. Katamāni pañca? Kāmacchandanīvaraṇaṁ, byāpādanīvaraṇaṁ, thinamiddhanīvaraṇaṁ, uddhaccakukkuccanīvaraṇaṁ, vicikicchānīvaraṇaṁ – imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca nīvaraṇāni.

2Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ nīvaraṇānaṁ pahānāya cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvetabbā. Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; vedanāsu … pe … citte … dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ nīvaraṇānaṁ pahānāya ime cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvetabbā"ti.
