Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "I will now explain the Dharma of good friends and also the Dharma of bad friends. Listen carefully and keep it in mind."

The bhikṣus replied, "Yes, World-Honored One!" At that time, the bhikṣus received the Buddha's instruction.

The World-Honored One said, "What is meant by the Dharma of bad friends? Here, bhikṣu, a bad friend thinks, 'I have left home to study the path among the noble class, while other bhikṣus have left home from low-caste families.' Relying on his own family background, he disparages others. This is called the Dharma of bad friends.

Furthermore, a bad friend thinks, 'I am extremely diligent in upholding the true Dharma, while other bhikṣus are not diligent in upholding the precepts.' He further uses this to disparage others and boast about himself. This is called the Dharma of bad friends.

Furthermore, a bad friend thinks, 'I have attained samādhi, while other bhikṣus do not have samādhi, their minds are confused and not fixed.' He relies on this samādhi to always boast about himself and disparage others. This is called the Dharma of bad friends.

Furthermore, a bad friend thinks, 'I am foremost in wisdom, while these other bhikṣus do not have wisdom.' He relies on this wisdom to boast about himself and disparage others. This is called the Dharma of bad friends.

Furthermore, a bad friend thinks, 'I always get food, bedding, bedding, and medicine for illness and weakness, while these other bhikṣus cannot obtain these offerings.' He relies on these material benefits to boast about himself and disparage others. This is called the Dharma of bad friends.

What are the dharmas of good friends? Here, bhikṣus! a good friend does not think, 'I was born into a noble family, while these other bhikṣus are not from noble families.' He is no different from them. This is called the Dharma of good friends.

Furthermore, a good friend does not think, 'I now uphold the precepts, while these other bhikṣus do not practice the precepts.' He is no different from them. He does not rely on these precepts to boast about himself or disparage others. This is called, bhikṣus! the Dharma of good friends.

Furthermore, bhikṣus! a good friend does not think, 'I have attained samādhi, while these other bhikṣus are distracted and unstable.' He is no different from them. He does not rely on this samādhi to boast about himself or disparage others. This is called, bhikṣus! the Dharma of good friends.

Furthermore, bhikṣus! a good friend does not think, 'I have attained wisdom, while these other bhikṣus lack wisdom.' He is no different from them. He does not rely on this wisdom to boast about himself or disparage others. This is called, bhikṣus! the Dharma of good friends.

Furthermore, bhikṣus! a good friend does not think, 'I can obtain robes, food, bedding, seats, and medicine for illness, while these other bhikṣus cannot obtain robes, food, bedding, seats, and medicine for illness.' He is no different from them. He does not rely on these benefits to boast about himself or disparage others. This is called, bhikṣus! the Dharma of good friends.

At that time, the World Honored One told the bhikṣus, "I now explain to you the Dharma of bad friends, and also explain to you the Dharma of good friends. Therefore, bhikṣus! You should all distance yourselves from the Dharma of bad friends and cultivate the Dharma of good friends together. Thus, bhikṣus! You should train in this way."

At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and practiced it.
