Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "The bhikṣu who practices in the wilderness should cultivate two dharmas. What are the two dharmas? They are tranquility and insight. If the bhikṣu who practices in the wilderness attains tranquility, he will accomplish the precepts, not lose the deportment, not violate the precepts, and create various merits. If the bhikṣu who practices in the wilderness attains insight, he will then contemplate suffering and know it as it is. He will contemplate the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path to the cessation of suffering, and know them as they are. Having contemplated in this way, he will be liberated from the defilements of desire, existence, and ignorance, and attain the knowledge of liberation: 'Birth and death are exhausted, the holy life has been established, what was to be done has been done, and there will be no more future lives.' He knows this as it is.

"The past Tathāgatas, Arhats, and Perfectly Enlightened Ones all accomplished this through these two dharmas. Because when the Bodhisattva was sitting under the Bodhi tree, he first contemplated these dharmas of tranquility and insight. If the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva attains tranquility, he will be able to subdue the demon Mara; if the Bodhisattva attains insight, he will then attain the three kinds of knowledge and accomplish unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Therefore, bhikṣus, the bhikṣu who practices in the wilderness should seek skillful means to practice these two dharmas. Thus, bhikṣus, you should train in this way."

At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and upheld it.
