Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "There are four kinds of garuḍas. What are the four? There are garuḍas born from eggs, born from wombs, born from moisture, and born from transformation. These are the four kinds of garuḍas. In the same way, bhikṣus, there are four kinds of dragons. What are the four? There are dragons born from eggs, born from wombs, born from moisture, and born from transformation. These are called, bhikṣus, the four kinds of dragons. |
Bhikṣus, you should know that when an egg-born garuḍa wants to eat a dragon, it flies up to the iron-spiked tree and dives into the ocean. The ocean water is 280,000 li wide and deep, with four dragon palaces below. There are dragons born from eggs, born from wombs, born from moisture, and born from transformation. At that time, the egg-born garuḍa flaps its wings to part the water and takes the egg-born dragon to eat it. If it goes towards the womb-born dragon, the garuḍa's body will perish. At that time, the garuḍa parts the water to take the dragon, and before the water has closed, it returns to the iron-spiked tree. |
Bhikṣus, you should know that when a womb-born garuḍa wants to eat a dragon, it flies up to the iron-spiked tree and dives into the ocean. The ocean water is 280,000 li wide and deep, and it parts the water to reach the womb-born dragon. If it encounters an egg-born dragon, it can also catch it and carry it out of the ocean. If it encounters a moisture-born dragon, the bird's body will die. |
Bhikṣus, you should know that when a moisture-born garuḍa wants to eat a dragon, it flies up to the iron-spiked tree and dives into the ocean. If it encounters an egg-born dragon, a womb-born dragon, or a moisture-born dragon, it can catch them all. If it encounters a transformation-born dragon, the bird's body will die. |
Bhikṣus, you should know that when a transformation-born garuḍa wants to eat a dragon, it flies up to the iron-spiked tree and dives into the ocean. The ocean water is 280,000 li wide and deep, and it parts the water to reach the egg-born dragon, the womb-born dragon, the moisture-born dragon, and the transformation-born dragon. It can catch them all. Before the ocean water closes, it returns to the iron-spiked tree. |
"Bhikṣus, you should know that if a dragon king has served the Buddha, the garuḍa cannot eat it. Why is that? The Tathāgata always practices the four immeasurables. Therefore, the bird cannot eat the dragon. What are the four immeasurables? The Tathāgata always practices the mind of loving-kindness, the mind of compassion, the mind of joy, and the mind of equanimity. These are called the four immeasurables of the Tathāgata. He has great strength and great courage, which cannot be destroyed. Therefore, the garuḍa cannot eat the dragon. Therefore, bhikṣus, you should practice the four immeasurables. Thus, bhikṣus, you should train in this way." |
At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and practiced it. |
