Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "When a holy king rules a distant country, if he accomplishes seven dharmas, he will not be captured by enemies or thieves. What are the seven? First, the city walls are extremely high and well-maintained, which is called the king's first accomplishment. Second, the city gates are strong, which is called the city's second accomplishment. Third, the outer moat is extremely deep and wide, which is called the city's third accomplishment. Fourth, the city is rich in grain and its granaries are full, which is called the city's fourth accomplishment. Fifth, the city is abundant in firewood and grass, which is called the city's fifth accomplishment. Sixth, the city is rich in weapons and military equipment, which is called the city's sixth accomplishment. Seventh, the city lord is extremely wise and talented, foreseeing people's feelings, punishing those who deserve punishment and governing those who deserve governance, which is called the city's seventh accomplishment. Outsiders cannot invade. Bhikṣus! This is called the city lord accomplishing these seven dharmas, and outsiders cannot disturb him. |
This bhikṣu is also like this. If he accomplishes seven dharmas, the evil Māra Pāpīyas will not find an opportunity. What are the seven? Here, bhikṣu! Accomplishing the precepts and rules, fully endowed with proper conduct, fearing even minor transgressions, let alone major ones. This is called the bhikṣu accomplishing this first dharma. The evil Māra will not find an opportunity, just like that city, high and wide, extremely formidable, and indestructible. |
Furthermore, bhikṣu! If one sees forms with the eyes, one does not give rise to attachment or thoughts, but fully possesses the eye faculty without any deficiency or leakage, and protects the eye faculty. The same is true for sounds heard by the ears, smells smelled by the nose, tastes tasted by the tongue, tactile sensations felt by the body, and dharmas cognized by the mind. One also does not give rise to thoughts, fully possesses the mind faculty without any disordered thoughts, and fully protects the mind faculty. This is called the bhikṣu accomplishing this second dharma. The evil Māra Pāpīyas will not find an opportunity, like that city with strong gates. |
Furthermore, bhikṣu! Being learned and not forgetting, always contemplating the right Dharma teachings, knowing all that one has experienced in the past. This is called the bhikṣu accomplishing this third dharma. The evil Māra Pāpīyas will not find an opportunity, like that city with a deep and wide outer moat. |
Furthermore, bhikṣu! Having many skillful means, all dharmas are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, fully pure, and able to cultivate the holy life. This is called the bhikṣu accomplishing this fourth dharma. Like that city with abundant grain, external enemies do not dare to invade. |
Furthermore, bhikṣu! Contemplating the four dhyānas, not yet free from taints. This is called the bhikṣu accomplishing this fifth dharma. The evil Māra Pāpīyas will not find an opportunity, like that city with abundant firewood and grass, outsiders cannot come and disturb. |
Furthermore, bhikṣu! Attaining the four bases of supernormal power, what is done is not difficult. This is called the bhikṣu accomplishing this sixth dharma. The evil Māra Pāpīyas will not find an opportunity, like that city inside, with weapons and armor. |
Furthermore, bhikṣu! Being able to discern the aggregates, sense bases, and sense fields, and also discerning the dharmas arising from the twelve links of dependent origination. This is called the bhikṣu accomplishing these seven dharmas. The evil Māra Pāpīyas will not find an opportunity, like the ruler of that city, wise and talented, able to accept and reject. |
Now this bhikṣu is also like this, fully knowing and discerning the aggregates, sense bases, and sense fields, and all illnesses. If a bhikṣu accomplishes these seven dharmas, the evil Māra Pāpīyas will never find an opportunity. Therefore, bhikṣus! You should seek means to discern the aggregates, sense bases, and sense fields, and the twelve links of dependent origination, without losing the sequence, and then transcend the realm of Māra, not dwelling within it. Thus, bhikṣus! You should train in this. |
At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and practiced it. |
