Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Venerable Dīrghanakha was staying in the Jeta Grove in Anāthapiṇḍada's Park near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time, Dīrghanakha was walking in meditation in the middle of the night. Then a deity came to where Dīrghanakha was and said to him in the sky, "Bhikṣu, you should know that this house will have smoke at night and fire during the day. The brāhman told the wise one, 'You should now hold a knife and chisel the mountain. When you chisel the mountain, you will surely see a burden. You should rescue it. You should chisel the mountain. When you chisel the mountain, you will surely see the mountain. You should now abandon the mountain. You should now chisel the mountain. When you chisel the mountain, you will surely see a frog. You should now abandon the frog. You should now chisel the mountain. When you chisel the mountain, you will surely see a mass of flesh. Having seen the mass of flesh, you should abandon it. You should now chisel the mountain. When you chisel the mountain, you will surely see a yoke. Having seen the yoke, you should abandon it. You should now chisel the mountain. Having chiseled the mountain, you will surely see two paths. Having seen the two paths, you should abandon them. You should now chisel the mountain. Having chiseled the mountain, you will surely see tree branches. Having seen the tree branches, you should abandon them. You should now chisel the mountain. Having chiseled the mountain, you will see a dragon. Having seen the dragon, do not speak with it. You should take refuge in it and seek its protection.' Bhikṣu, you should carefully contemplate this meaning. If you do not understand it, then go to Śrāvastī and ask the World-Honored One about this meaning. If the Tathāgata speaks, then you should contemplate it well. Because I do not now see anyone, whether a śramaṇa, brāhman, Māra, or Māra's followers, who can understand this meaning, except for the Tathāgata and the Tathāgata's disciples. If you hear it from me, | 是时,迦叶夜半而经行。 |
At that time, Dīrghanakha replied to the deity, "This matter is excellent." | |
At that time, Dīrghanakha, in the morning, went to where the World-Honored One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the Buddha's feet and sat to one side. He then told the World-Honored One about this matter in detail. At that time, Dīrghanakha asked the World-Honored One, "Now I will ask the Tathāgata about the meaning of what the deity said. What does it mean that there is smoke at night and fire during the day? Why is it called a brāhman? Why is it called a wise one? Again, what does it mean to chisel the mountain? What does it mean to call it a knife? Why is it called a burden? Again, what does it mean to call it a mountain? Why is it also called a frog? Why is it also called a mass of flesh? Why is it also called a yoke? Why is it also called two paths? What does it mean to call it tree branches? Why is it called a dragon?" |
The World-Honored One said, "The house refers to the physical body, which is formed from the four great elements and the five aggregates. It gradually grows from the blood and flesh of the parents, and must always be nourished and fed to prevent hunger. This is the law of dispersal. The smoke at night refers to the thoughts in the minds of sentient beings. The fire during the day refers to the actions of body, speech, and mind. The brāhman refers to the arhat. The wise one refers to the learner. Chiseling the mountain refers to the mind of diligence. The knife refers to wisdom. The burden refers to the five knots. The mountain refers to arrogance. The frog refers to the mind of anger. The mass of flesh refers to desire. The yoke refers to the five desires. The two paths refer to doubt. The tree branches refer to ignorance. The dragon refers to the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One. The meaning of what the deity said is like this. You should now contemplate it carefully, and before long you will exhaust all afflictions." |
At that time, Dīrghanakha received this teaching from the Tathāgata. He practiced in seclusion and attained arahantship. This is why the noble ones shave their heads and beards, leave home to study the Way, and practice the holy life: to end birth and death, establish the pure practice, accomplish what is to be done, and no longer take rebirth, truly knowing it. |
At that time, Dīrghanakha heard the Buddha's teaching and joyfully accepted it. |
