Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Buddha was in the realm of Magadha, together with a great assembly of five hundred bhikṣus. He gradually arrived at the side of the river. | |
At that time, the World-Honored One saw a large log being carried away by the water in the river. He then sat down under a tree by the water's edge. At that time, the World-Honored One said to the bhikṣus, "Do you see the log being carried away by the water?" |
The bhikṣus said to the Buddha, "Yes, we see it." |
The World-Honored One said, "If this log does not get stuck on this shore, does not get stuck on the other shore, does not sink, does not get stuck on the shore, is not caught by humans, is not caught by non-humans, is not turned around by the water, and does not rot, it will gradually reach the ocean. Because the ocean is the source of all rivers. You bhikṣus are also like this. If you do not get stuck on this shore, do not get stuck on the other shore, do not sink, do not get stuck on the shore, are not caught by humans or non-humans, are not turned around by the water, and do not rot, you will gradually reach the place of nirvāṇa. Because nirvāṇa is the source of right view, right practice, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration." |
At that time, there was a cowherd named Nanda, leaning on a staff. The cowherd gradually came to where the World-Honored One was standing, having heard this teaching from afar. The cowherd then said to the World-Honored One, "I also do not get stuck on this shore, do not get stuck on the other shore, do not sink, do not get stuck on the shore, am not caught by humans, am not caught by non-humans, am not turned around by the water, and do not rot. I will gradually reach the place of nirvāṇa. I only wish that the World-Honored One would allow me to follow the path and become a śramaṇa." |
The World-Honored One said, "You must return the cows to their owner before you can become a śramaṇa." | |
The cowherd Nanda replied, "These cows are thinking of their calves and will return home on their own. I only wish that the World-Honored One would allow me to follow the path." |
The World-Honored One said, "Although these cows will return home, you must still go and hand them over." |
At that time, the cowherd received the instruction, went to hand over the cows, returned to the Buddha's place, and said to the World-Honored One, "I have now handed over the cows. I only wish that the World-Honored One would allow me to become a śramaṇa." At that time, the Tathāgata allowed him to become a śramaṇa and receive full ordination. |
A certain bhikṣu addressed the World-Honored One, saying, "What is this shore? What is the other shore? What is sinking in the middle? What is being on the shore? What is not being caught by humans? What is not being caught by non-humans? What is not being swept away by the water? What is not rotting?" |
The Buddha told the bhikṣu, "This shore refers to the body. The other shore refers to the cessation of the body. Sinking in the middle refers to desire and love. Being on the shore refers to the five desires. Being caught by humans refers to when a noble son makes this vow: 'Holding this merit and blessings, I will become a great king or a great minister.' Being caught by non-humans refers to when a bhikṣu makes this vow: 'Born among the Four Heavenly Kings, I will practice the brahma-conduct. Now, holding this merit, I will be born among the gods.' This is called being caught by non-humans. Being swept away by the water refers to wrong doubt. Rotting refers to wrong views, wrong conduct, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, and wrong concentration. This is called rotting." |
At that time, the bhikṣu Nanda was practicing diligently in a secluded place. The reason why sons of noble families shave their heads and beards, leave home to study the path, and practice the unsurpassed brahma-conduct is to end birth and death, establish the brahma-conduct, accomplish what is to be done, and no longer undergo rebirth. He then attained arahantship right on that seat. |
At that time, Nanda, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and practiced it. |
