Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Buddha was in the Bamboo Grove. | |
At that time, the World Honored One, at the proper time, put on his robe, took his alms bowl, and entered the village of Brahmins to beg for alms. At that time, the evil Mara Pāpīyas thought: "Now this śramaṇa wants to enter the village to beg for alms. I should now use means to instruct the men and women not to give him food." At that time, the evil Mara Pāpīyas immediately told the people of the country: "Do not give food to that śramaṇa Gautama." |
At that time, the World-Honored One entered the village to beg for alms. The people did not speak with the Tathāgata, nor did anyone come to serve and make offerings. The Tathāgata begged for alms but did not receive anything, so he returned out of the village. |
At that time, the evil Mara Pāpīyān came to the Tathāgata and asked the Buddha, "Ascetic! Did you not get any alms?" | |
The World-Honored One said, "It is because of the demon's doing that I cannot receive alms. You will also not receive it for long. Now, listen to me, demon! In the Bhadrakalpa, there was a Buddha named Krakucchanda Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, Perfect in Knowledge and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the Secular World, Unsurpassed Person, Tamer of Men, Teacher of Gods and Men, Buddha, World-Honored One, who appeared in the world. At that time, he also stayed in this village with a retinue of forty thousand. At that time, the evil demon Māra thought, 'I now seek this śramaṇa, but I will not succeed.' Then the demon thought again, 'I should now order the people of the village of Brāhmaṇa not to give alms to the śramaṇa.' At that time, the assembly of sages put on their robes, took their bowls, entered the village to beg for food. At that time, the bhikṣus did not receive any food, so they returned out of the village. |
"At that time, the Buddha told the bhikṣus, speaking this kind of wonderful Dharma: 'The contemplation of food has nine aspects: four kinds of human food and five kinds of supramundane food. What are the four kinds of human food? First, solid food; second, pleasure; third, recollection; fourth, consciousness. These are called the four kinds of food in the world. What are the five kinds of food called supramundane? First, meditation; second, aspiration; third, recollection; fourth, the food of the eight liberations; fifth, joy. These are called the five kinds of food. Thus, bhikṣus! The nine kinds of food, which are supramundane, should be diligently contemplated. Abandon the four kinds of food and seek the means to accomplish the five kinds of food. Thus, bhikṣus! You should train in this way.' At that time, the bhikṣus, having received the Buddha's teaching, immediately disciplined themselves and accomplished the five kinds of food. At that time, Māra Pāpīyas was unable to find an opportunity. |
"At that time, Māra thought, 'I cannot now find an opportunity with this śramaṇa. I shall now seek an opportunity with his eyes, ears, nose, mouth, body, and mind. I shall now dwell in the village and teach the people, causing the śramaṇa's disciples to seek material support. I shall cause them to obtain it, so that the material support will be doubled and increased. I shall cause those bhikṣus to be attached to material support, unable to temporarily let go, and again wish to find an opportunity with the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, body, and mind.' |
"At that time, the Buddha and the śrāvakas, having put on their robes and taken their alms bowls, entered the village to beg for food. At that time, the people of the brāhman village provided the bhikṣus with robes, food, bedding, and medicine for the sick, not allowing them to be in want, all taking hold of the saṃghāṭī robe and forcefully giving things. At that time, that Buddha spoke this kind of Dharma to the assembly of śrāvakas: 'As for material gain, it causes one to fall into evil destinies and does not allow one to reach the state of non-conditioning. You bhikṣus! Do not give rise to a mind that is attached to material gain, but should think of abandoning it; if a bhikṣu is attached to material gain, he will not accomplish the five parts of the Dharma body and will not be fully endowed with the virtues of the precepts.' |
"Therefore, bhikṣus, you should not give rise to a mind of gain and honor that has not yet arisen, and you should quickly extinguish a mind of gain and honor that has already arisen. Thus, bhikṣus, you should train in this." At that time, Māra Pāpīyān vanished on the spot. |
At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and practiced it. |
