Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "The Tathāgata, having accomplished the ten powers, knows for himself that he is without attachment. He is able to roar like a lion in the great assembly, turning the unsurpassed Dharma wheel and liberating sentient beings. Namely, this form, this form's origination, this form's cessation, this form's way out. Observing this feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, the origination of consciousness, the cessation of consciousness, the way out of consciousness. Because of this, there is that. When this arises, that arises. Ignorance conditions formations, formations condition consciousness, consciousness conditions name-and-form, name-and-form conditions the six sense bases, the six sense bases condition contact, contact conditions feeling, feeling conditions craving, craving conditions clinging, clinging conditions existence, existence conditions birth, birth conditions old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and distress, which are immeasurable. Based on this five-aggregate body, there are these conditioned phenomena. When this ceases, that ceases. When this does not exist, that does not exist. When ignorance ceases, formations cease. When formations cease, consciousness ceases. When consciousness ceases, name-and-form ceases. When name-and-form ceases, the six sense bases cease. When the six sense bases cease, contact ceases. When contact ceases, feeling ceases. When feeling ceases, craving ceases. When craving ceases, clinging ceases. When clinging ceases, existence ceases. When existence ceases, birth ceases. When birth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and distress all completely cease. |
"Bhikṣus, you should know that my Dharma is very vast and profound, cutting off all doubts and abiding in the true Dharma. If good men and good women diligently apply their minds without any deficiency, even if their bodies wither away, they will never abandon the practice of diligence, keeping their minds focused without forgetting. Practicing the Dharma of suffering is extremely difficult. They should enjoy dwelling in quiet places, contemplating in tranquility, not abandoning the practice of austerity, just as the Tathāgata now practices the holy life. Therefore, bhikṣus! If you observe yourselves at the right time, contemplate the subtle Dharma, and also observe the two meanings, practice without negligence, so that you may attain the fruit and reach the place of the cessation of the nectar of immortality. If you receive the offerings of others, such as robes, food and drink, bedding, and medicine for illness, it will not be in vain. It will also cause your parents to receive their rewards, serving the Buddhas and paying homage and making offerings to them. Thus, bhikṣus! You should train like this." |
At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and practiced it. |
