Madhyamāgama

Chapter 9 因品

I have heard thus:

At one time, the Buddha was traveling in the country of Śrāvastī, staying at the Jeta Grove Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma.

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "If there are śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas who have the notion of earth regarding earth, they consider earth to be the self, earth to be the abode of the self, the self to be the abode of earth. Having thus considered earth to be the self, they do not know earth. Thus, they do not know water, fire, wind, the self, heaven, the creator, Brahmā, the trouble-free, the passionless. They have the notion of purity regarding purity, they consider purity to be the self, purity to be the abode of the self, the self to be the abode of purity. Having thus considered purity to be the self, they do not know purity. They do not know the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, one, separate, various, seen, heard, cognized, attained, contemplated, intended, thought, from this world to the other world, from the other world to this world. They have the notion of everything regarding everything, they consider everything to be the self, everything to be the abode of the self, the self to be the abode of everything. Having thus considered everything to be the self, they do not know everything."

If there are śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas who know earth regarding earth, they know that earth is not the self, earth is not the abode of the self, the self is not the abode of earth. Having not thus considered earth to be the self, they know earth. Thus, they know water, fire, wind, the self, heaven, the creator, Brahmā, the trouble-free, the passionless. They know purity regarding purity, they know that purity is not the self, purity is not the abode of the self, the self is not the abode of purity. Having not thus considered purity to be the self, they know purity. They know the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, one, separate, various, seen, heard, cognized, attained, contemplated, intended, thought, from this world to the other world, from the other world to this world. They know everything regarding everything, they know that everything is not the self, everything is not the abode of the self, the self is not the abode of everything. Having not thus considered everything to be the self, they know everything.

I know earth regarding earth, I know that earth is not the self, earth is not the abode of the self, the self is not the abode of earth. Having not thus considered earth to be the self, I know earth. Thus, I know water, fire, wind, the self, heaven, the creator, Brahmā, the trouble-free, the passionless. I know purity regarding purity, I know that purity is not the self, purity is not the abode of the self, the self is not the abode of purity. Having not thus considered purity to be the self, I know purity. I know the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, one, separate, various, seen, heard, cognized, attained, contemplated, intended, thought, from this world to the other world, from the other world to this world. I know everything regarding everything, I know that everything is not the self, everything is not the abode of the self, the self is not the abode of everything. Having not thus considered everything to be the self, I know everything.

The Buddha spoke thus. Those bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and practiced accordingly.

The tenth chapter on thoughts is completed.
