Chapter 10 林品

Two forests, two contemplations of the mind, two Dārukas
two Dharmas, two Udrakas, two honey pills, two Gautamis

I have heard thus:

Once, the Buddha was traveling in the country of Śrāvastī, staying at the Jeta Grove Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma.

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus: "Bhikṣus, if a bhikṣu dwells in a forest, relying on that forest, he may attain right mindfulness if he lacks it, attain concentration if his mind is not concentrated, attain liberation if he is not liberated, exhaust the contaminants if they are not exhausted, and attain the unsurpassed peaceful nirvāṇa if he has not yet attained it. The requisites of the path, such as robes, food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life, are easily obtained without difficulty. If that bhikṣu dwells in that forest, but does not attain right mindfulness if he lacks it, does not attain concentration if his mind is not concentrated, does not attain liberation if he is not liberated, does not exhaust the contaminants if they are not exhausted, does not attain the unsurpassed peaceful nirvāṇa if he has not yet attained it, and does not attain nirvāṇa; and the requisites of the path, such as robes, food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life, are easily obtained without difficulty. That bhikṣu should contemplate thus: 'I have gone forth to practice the path, not for the sake of robes, not for the sake of food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life. Yet I dwell in this forest, but do not attain right mindfulness if I lack it, do not attain concentration if my mind is not concentrated, do not attain liberation if I am not liberated, do not exhaust the contaminants if they are not exhausted, do not attain the unsurpassed peaceful nirvāṇa if I have not yet attained it, and do not attain nirvāṇa; and the requisites of the path, such as robes, food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life, are easily obtained without difficulty.' Having contemplated thus, that bhikṣu may abandon that forest and leave.

Bhikṣus, if a bhikṣu dwells in a forest, relying on that forest, he may attain right mindfulness if he lacks it, attain concentration if his mind is not concentrated, attain liberation if he is not liberated, exhaust the contaminants if they are not exhausted, and attain the unsurpassed peaceful nirvāṇa if he has not yet attained it. The requisites of the path, such as robes, food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life, are easily obtained without difficulty. If that bhikṣu dwells in that forest, and attains right mindfulness if he lacks it, attains concentration if his mind is not concentrated, attains liberation if he is not liberated, exhausts the contaminants if they are not exhausted, attains the unsurpassed peaceful nirvāṇa if he has not yet attained it, and attains nirvāṇa; and the requisites of the path, such as robes, food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life, are easily obtained without difficulty. That bhikṣu should contemplate thus: 'I have gone forth to practice the path, not for the sake of robes, not for the sake of food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life. Yet I dwell in this forest, and attain right mindfulness if I lack it, attain concentration if my mind is not concentrated, attain liberation if I am not liberated, exhaust the contaminants if they are not exhausted, attain the unsurpassed peaceful nirvāṇa if I have not yet attained it, and attain nirvāṇa; and the requisites of the path, such as robes, food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life, are easily obtained without difficulty.' Having contemplated thus, that bhikṣu may dwell in that forest.

If that bhikṣu dwells in that forest, but does not attain right mindfulness if he lacks it, does not attain concentration if his mind is not concentrated, does not attain liberation if he is not liberated, does not exhaust the contaminants if they are not exhausted, does not attain the unsurpassed peaceful nirvāṇa if he has not yet attained it, and does not attain nirvāṇa; and the requisites of the path, such as robes, food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life, are very difficult to obtain. That bhikṣu should contemplate thus: 'I dwell in this forest, but do not attain right mindfulness if I lack it, do not attain concentration if my mind is not concentrated, do not attain liberation if I am not liberated, do not exhaust the contaminants if they are not exhausted, do not attain the unsurpassed peaceful nirvāṇa if I have not yet attained it, and do not attain nirvāṇa; and the requisites of the path, such as robes, food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life, are very difficult to obtain.' Having contemplated thus, that bhikṣu may abandon that forest and leave in the middle of the night without informing anyone.

"Bhikṣus, if a bhikṣu dwells in a forest, relying on that forest, he may attain right mindfulness if he lacks it, attain concentration if his mind is not concentrated, attain liberation if he is not liberated, exhaust the contaminants if they are not exhausted, and attain the unsurpassed peaceful nirvāṇa if he has not yet attained it. That bhikṣu should contemplate thus: 'I dwell in this forest, and attain right mindfulness if I lack it, attain concentration if my mind is not concentrated, attain liberation if I am not liberated, exhaust the contaminants if they are not exhausted, attain the unsurpassed peaceful nirvāṇa if I have not yet attained it, and attain nirvāṇa; and the requisites of the path, such as robes, food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life, are easily obtained without difficulty.' Having contemplated thus, that bhikṣu may dwell in that forest for his entire life until his death. As for dwelling in a forest, dwelling in a charnel ground, a village, or relying on people is also like this."

The Buddha spoke thus. Those bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and practiced accordingly.
