Madhyamāgama

Chapter 10 林品

I have heard thus:

At one time, the Buddha was traveling in the country of Śrāvastī, staying at the Jeta Grove Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma.

At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the bhikṣus, saying: "Bhikṣus, if a bhikṣu dwells in a certain forest, relying on that forest, thinking, 'I have renounced the household life to pursue the path of the renunciant, seeking the meaning of the renunciant. This meaning is to be attained by me. The requisites of the path, such as robes, food and drink, bedding and seats, and medicine, are all easily obtained without difficulty.' If that bhikṣu, dwelling in that forest, thinks, 'I have renounced the household life to pursue the path of the renunciant, seeking the meaning of the renunciant. This meaning is not to be attained by me. The requisites of the path, such as robes, food and drink, bedding and seats, and medicine, are all easily obtained without difficulty,' then that bhikṣu should contemplate thus: 'I have renounced the household life to pursue the path of the renunciant, not for the sake of robes, not for the sake of food and drink, bedding and seats, and medicine, nor for the sake of the requisites of life. Rather, I dwell in this forest, having renounced the household life to pursue the path of the renunciant, seeking the meaning of the renunciant. This meaning is not to be attained by me. The requisites of the path, such as robes, food and drink, bedding and seats, and medicine, are all easily obtained without difficulty.' Having contemplated thus, that bhikṣu may abandon that forest and leave.

Bhikṣus, if a bhikṣu dwells in a certain forest, relying on that forest, thinking, 'I have renounced the household life to pursue the path of the renunciant, seeking the meaning of the renunciant. This meaning is to be attained by me. The requisites of the path, such as robes, food and drink, bedding and seats, and medicine, are all very difficult to obtain,' then that bhikṣu should contemplate thus: 'I have renounced the household life to pursue the path of the renunciant, not for the sake of robes, not for the sake of food and drink, bedding and seats, and medicine, nor for the sake of the requisites of life. Rather, I dwell in this forest, having renounced the household life to pursue the path of the renunciant, seeking the meaning of the renunciant. This meaning is to be attained by me. The requisites of the path, such as robes, food and drink, bedding and seats, and medicine, are all very difficult to obtain.' Having contemplated thus, that bhikṣu may dwell in that forest.

Bhikṣus, if a bhikṣu dwells in a certain forest, relying on that forest, thinking, 'I have renounced the household life to pursue the path of the renunciant, seeking the meaning of the renunciant. The requisites of the path, such as robes, food and drink, bedding and seats, and medicine, are all very difficult to obtain,' then that bhikṣu should contemplate thus: 'I dwell in this forest, having renounced the household life to pursue the path of the renunciant, seeking the meaning of the renunciant. This meaning is not to be attained by me. The requisites of the path, such as robes, food and drink, bedding and seats, and medicine, are all very difficult to obtain.' Having contemplated thus, that bhikṣu may abandon that forest and leave.

Bhikṣus, if a bhikṣu dwells in a certain forest, relying on that forest, thinking, 'I have renounced the household life to pursue the path of the renunciant, seeking the meaning of the renunciant. This meaning is to be attained by me. The requisites of the path, such as robes, food and drink, bedding and seats, and medicine, are all easily obtained without difficulty,' then that bhikṣu should contemplate thus: 'I dwell in this forest, having renounced the household life to pursue the path of the renunciant, seeking the meaning of the renunciant. This meaning is to be attained by me. The requisites of the path, such as robes, food and drink, bedding and seats, and medicine, are all easily obtained without difficulty.' Having contemplated thus, that bhikṣu may dwell in that forest for the rest of his life, until his death.

The Buddha spoke thus. Those bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and received them with respect.
