Madhyamāgama

Chapter 7

I have heard thus:

At one time, the Buddha was wandering in Ukkattha, on the banks of the Ganges River.

At that time, a certain bhikṣu rose from his afternoon meditation, went to where the Buddha was, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, sat to one side, and said, "World-Honored One! Please briefly teach the Dharma for me. Having heard it from the World-Honored One, I will dwell in seclusion, alone, without negligence, practicing diligently. Because of dwelling in seclusion, alone, without negligence, practicing diligently, the purpose of the clansmen who shave their heads and beards, put on the saffron robes, go forth from the household to homelessness, and practice the path, is to complete the unsurpassed holy life, to know and realize for oneself in this very life, to accomplish and dwell in it, to end birth, establish the holy life, do what is to be done, and not be subject to another existence, knowing and seeing it as it really is."

The World-Honored One said, "Bhikṣu! You should train like this: to make the mind dwell internally, without moving, to cultivate immeasurable goodness, and to contemplate the internal body as it really is. Practice diligently, establish right mindfulness and right knowledge, and well control your mind, to be free from stinginess and greed, and to have no sorrow or distress. Also contemplate the external body as it really is. Practice diligently, establish right mindfulness and right knowledge, and well control your mind, to be free from stinginess and greed, and to have no sorrow or distress. Also contemplate the internal and external body as it really is. Practice diligently, establish right mindfulness and right knowledge, and well control your mind, to be free from stinginess and greed, and to have no sorrow or distress. Bhikṣu! Such samādhi should be well cultivated when going, coming, standing, sitting, lying down, sleeping, waking, and when sleeping and waking. Furthermore, you should cultivate samādhi with initial and sustained thought, samādhi with initial thought and little sustained thought, and samādhi without initial thought and sustained thought. You should also cultivate samādhi accompanied by joy, samādhi accompanied by pleasure, samādhi accompanied by samādhi, and samādhi accompanied by equanimity.

Bhikṣu! If you cultivate this samādhi well, bhikṣu! You should further cultivate contemplating internal feelings as they really are. Practice diligently, establish right mindfulness and right knowledge, and well control your mind, to be free from stinginess and greed, and to have no sorrow or distress. Also contemplate external feelings as they really are. Practice diligently, establish right mindfulness and right knowledge, and well control your mind, to be free from stinginess and greed, and to have no sorrow or distress. Also contemplate internal and external feelings as they really are. Practice diligently, establish right mindfulness and right knowledge, and well control your mind, to be free from stinginess and greed, and to have no sorrow or distress. Bhikṣu! You should also cultivate samādhi accompanied by joy, samādhi accompanied by pleasure, samādhi accompanied by samādhi, and samādhi accompanied by equanimity.

Bhikṣu! If you cultivate this samādhi well, bhikṣu! You should further cultivate contemplating internal dharmas as they really are. Practice diligently, establish right mindfulness and right knowledge, and well control your mind, to be free from stinginess and greed, and to have no sorrow or distress. Also contemplate external dharmas as they really are. Practice diligently, establish right mindfulness and right knowledge, and well control your mind, to be free from stinginess and greed, and to have no sorrow or distress. Also contemplate internal and external dharmas as they really are. You should also cultivate samādhi accompanied by joy, samādhi accompanied by pleasure, samādhi accompanied by samādhi, and samādhi accompanied by equanimity.

Bhikṣu! If you cultivate this samādhi well, bhikṣu! Your mind should be accompanied by loving-kindness, and pervade one direction, accomplishing and dwelling. Thus, the second, third, and fourth directions, the four intermediate directions, above and below, everywhere, your mind is accompanied by loving-kindness, without knots, without resentment, without anger, without conflict, extremely vast, very great, immeasurable, well cultivated, and pervades all worlds, accomplishing and dwelling; thus, compassion and joy, your mind is accompanied by equanimity, without knots, without resentment, without anger, without conflict, extremely vast, very great, immeasurable, well cultivated, and pervades all worlds, accomplishing and dwelling.

Bhikṣu! If you cultivate this samādhi well, if you travel to the east, you will surely attain peace and happiness, without any suffering or affliction; if you travel to the south, west, or north, you will surely attain peace and happiness, without any suffering or affliction. Bhikṣu! If you cultivate this samādhi well, I do not even say that your wholesome dharmas will remain, let alone say that they will decline. You should only increase wholesome dharmas day and night, without decline. Bhikṣu! If you cultivate this samādhi well, you will surely attain one of two fruits, either attaining final knowledge in this life, or else attaining the state of a non-returner.

Then that bhikṣu, having heard the Buddha's words, accepted them well and remembered them well. He immediately rose from his seat, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times, and departed. He upheld the Buddha's teachings, dwelling in seclusion, alone, without negligence, practicing diligently. Because of dwelling in seclusion, alone, without negligence, and practicing diligently, the noble son, for the sake of which he shaved off his hair and beard, donned the saffron robes, left home out of faith, and went forth to practice the path, only completed the unsurpassed holy life in this very life, knowing and realizing it for himself, accomplishing and dwelling in it. Birth is exhausted, the holy life has been established, what was to be done has been done, there will be no more of this mundane state - he knew it as it really is. That venerable one, having known the Dharma, attained arahantship.

The Buddha spoke thus. Those bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and upheld them.
