Saṃyuktāgama (2nd)

Thus have I heard:

Thus have I heard:

The Buddha told Ānanda: "It is so, it is so. There are good fragrances in the world that can be smelled both when the wind is in the right direction and when the wind is in the wrong direction. What are they? If in a village or town, whether male or female, they practice not killing, not stealing, not engaging in sexual misconduct, not lying, and not drinking alcohol, then the devas and those with the divine eye will all praise them. The fragrance of the precepts of those males and females in that village or town who uphold the five precepts can be smelled both when the wind is in the right direction and when the wind is in the wrong direction."

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:

If sandalwood and agarwood, roots, stems, and flowers and leaves, this fragrance
can be smelled when the wind is in the right direction, but
not when the wind is in the wrong direction. The fragrance of
the precepts of a virtuous person pervades the world, their fame fills
the ten directions, and it is heard both when the wind is
in the right direction and when the wind is in the wrong
direction. Sandalwood and agarwood, blue lotus and white lotus, such fragrances are
inferior, not like the fragrance of upholding the precepts. Such various fragrances
are not heard far away, but the fragrance of the precepts is
heard in the ten directions, surpassing the fragrances of the devas. Such
pure precepts are based on non-laxity, abiding in the undefiled Dharma, and
attaining liberation through right knowledge. Although the demons may seek it, they
do not know its location. This is called the peaceful path, the
most pure path, permanently leaving behind all directions, abandoning all destinies.

Having spoken this verse, the bhikṣus, upon hearing the Buddha's words, rejoiced and upheld them.
