Thus have I heard: |
Thus have I heard: | 一时,佛在那提迦国瓫寔迦精舍。 |
At that time, Venerable Bakkula was standing behind the Buddha, fanning him. He said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! How can a bhikṣu cultivate various dhyānas without relying on the four great elements and the four formless concentrations, up to not relying on the thoughts of perception and contemplation? If so, how can bhikṣus attain such dhyānas? Śakra Devānām-Indra and the great assembly join their palms in respect and praise those who attain such samādhi, saying, 'This good man, the best among men, relies on what to cultivate various dhyānas?'" |
The Buddha told Bakkula, "If a bhikṣu deeply cultivates samādhi and observes that the great earth is all false and deceptive, he does not see any real thought of earth. The same is true for water, fire, wind, the four formless concentrations, this world, the other world, the sun, moon, stars, knowledge, perception, seeking, the realm of mind and thought, and the places that wisdom cannot reach. They are all false and deceptive, without any real dharmas. They are only provisional names, the combination of causes and conditions, with various names. Observing their emptiness and tranquility, one does not see any dharmas or non-dharmas." |
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying: |
|
|
When this teaching was spoken, Mahākātyāyana was far removed from defilements and impurities, and attained the purity of the Dharma eye. The monk Bakkula permanently extinguished afflictions, did not accept future births, and exhausted all bonds of existence. |
At that time, the bhikṣus heard the Buddha's teaching and joyfully upheld it. |
