Thus have I heard: |
Once, the Buddha was in the Nyagrodha Forest in Kapilavastu. At that time, the Licchavi Vimalakīrti went to where the Buddha was, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, sat to one side, and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! If there are bhikṣus on the stage of learning, whose work is not yet accomplished, who always wish to seek the fruit of arahantship and enter nirvāṇa, how should bhikṣus cultivate and practice a few dharmas, exhaust all afflictions, attain the undefiled mind, attain liberation of the mind, attain liberation of wisdom, attain the fruit of realization in the present world, attain the undefiled precepts, and be able to determine for themselves, 'My birth is exhausted, the practice of purity is established, what was to be done is done, and I will not undergo further rebirth'?" |
The Buddha told Mahānāman, "If there are bhikṣus on the stage of learning, who have not yet attained the state of no-more-learning, and whose minds always seek to attain nirvāṇa, they should always cultivate the six recollections. It is like a person with a weak body who wants to eat delicious food for their own pleasure. The bhikṣus are also like this, seeking nirvāṇa, cultivating the six recollections. What are the six? First, recollecting the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, the One with Perfect Wisdom and Conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the Unsurpassed One, the Tamer of Men, the Teacher of Gods and Men, the Buddha, the Blessed One. At that time, there is no greed, anger, or delusion, only a pure and straightforward mind. Because of the straightforward mind, one attains the Dharma, attains the meaning, attains closeness to the Buddha, and gives rise to joy. Because of joy, one attains physical ease. Because of physical ease, one attains mental concentration. Because of mental concentration, one has an equal mind towards enemies and relatives, and always abides in the stream of the Dharma, enters the concentrated mind, cultivates the recollection of the Buddha, and heads towards nirvāṇa. This is called recollecting the Buddha. Second, recollecting the Dharma. The Dharma refers to the merits possessed by the Tathāgata, the ten powers, the fearlessnesses, and the definite heading towards nirvāṇa. One should observe this Dharma with utmost sincerity. The wise know that the noble disciples should cultivate the recollection of the Dharma. At that time, one is free from greed, anger, and delusion, and only has a pure and straightforward mind. Because of the straightforward mind, one attains the meaning, attains closeness to the Dharma, and gives rise to joy. Because of joy, one attains physical ease. Because of physical ease, one attains mental concentration. Because of mental concentration, one has an equal mind towards enemies and relatives, and abides in the stream of the Dharma, enters the concentrated mind. Cultivating the recollection of the Dharma, heading towards nirvāṇa, this is called recollecting the Dharma. Third, recollecting the Saṅgha. The Saṅgha refers to the disciples of the Tathāgata who have attained the undefiled Dharma and can be a good field of merit for the world. What is called a good field of merit? There are those who are heading towards the stream-enterer, those who have attained the stream-enterer, those who are heading towards the once-returner, those who have attained the once-returner, those who are heading towards the non-returner, those who have attained the non-returner, those who are heading towards the arhat, and those who have attained the arhat | 佛告摩诃男:「若有比丘在于学地,未得无学,意恒进求,欲得涅槃,常修六念。 |
"Mahanama, if there are bhikshus who are still learners, whose work is not yet done, who always wish to seek the fruit of arahantship and enter nirvana, they should sincerely cultivate these six recollections. By cultivating these six recollections, they will exhaust all afflictions, attain liberation of the mind, liberation of wisdom, and attain the fruit of realization in the present world. Having attained the fruit, they will declare: 'My birth is exhausted, the practice of purity is established, what was to be done is done, and I will not undergo further rebirth.'" |
At that time, Mahanama and the bhikshus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, rejoiced and received it with respect. | |
