Saṃyuktāgama (2nd)

Thus have I heard:

Once, the Buddha was wandering and teaching in the peach river forest in Magadha. He saw some shepherds who said that there was a bandit named Angulimala in the forest who often harmed people. The Buddha told the shepherds, "That bandit may not harm you." He then continued on his way. He saw more shepherds who said the same thing, and the Buddha answered as before. This happened a third time, and the Buddha still answered, "That evil person may not harm you."

The Buddha reached the forest, and Angulimala saw the Buddha coming from afar. He held the scabbard in his left hand and drew his sword with his right hand, leaping forward. Although he ran, the Tathāgata walked slowly and could not catch up. Angulimala ran to the limit of his strength and said to the Buddha, "Stop! Stop! Monk!" The Buddha said to him, "I am always still, but you are not still." Angulimala then spoke a verse:

The monk does not stop walking, yet says he is always still. I
am truly still now, yet you say I am not still. How can
you say you are still, while saying I am walking and not still?

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse:

I have long abandoned harming sentient beings with weapons. You torment
sentient beings and do not abandon this evil karma. Therefore, I
say I am still, while you are called not still. I
have abandoned all harmful poisons towards all living beings. You do
not stop evil karma and always do unwholesome karma. Therefore, I
say I am still, while you are called not still. I
have abandoned all harm towards all living beings. You harm living
beings and have not eliminated dark karma. Therefore, I say I
am still, while you are called not still. I delight in
my own Dharma, concentrating my mind without negligence. You do not
see the four assemblies, and are not still in all respects
This is called my true stillness, while you are called not still.

Angulimala also spoke a verse:

I have long dwelt in the wilderness, yet I have never seen such
a person. The Bhagavan has come here and shown me the good Dharma
I have long cultivated evil karma, but today I have completely abandoned it
I now listen to your words, following the Dharma to eliminate all evils."
He put his sword back in its sheath and threw it into a
deep pit. He then bowed his head and took refuge in the World
Honored One. With a very fierce and sharp faith, he resolved to go
forth and leave home. The Buddha arose with a mind of great compassion
benefiting all worlds. He said, "Come, you are good!" and he immediately became a monk.

At that time, the clansman Angulimala's beard and hair fell out by themselves, he put on the Dharma robes, and he had already gone forth. Dwelling in emptiness and tranquility, his mind was not negligent. He diligently practiced the path and diligently cultivated diligence. By being able to concentrate and focus his mind, he practiced the unsurpassed pure conduct, exhausted all suffering, and in the present life, he personally attained realization and personally knew the Dharma. He knew that his birth was already ended, the pure conduct was already established, what was to be done was already accomplished, and he would not experience future existence.

At that time, Venerable Agyata had already attained arahantship and attained the bliss of liberation. He then spoke a verse, saying:

Now my name is Agyata, but later I will be a great
destroyer. My name now is true, truly I am Agyata. Now my
body is free from harm, and so are my speech and mind
I will never harm others, this is truly called Agyata. I was
once covered in blood, therefore called Angulimala. I was carried away by
a great rushing stream, therefore I take refuge in the Buddha. Taking
refuge, I received the precepts, and immediately attained the three insights. I
fully knew the Buddha's teachings and practiced them. The world's great charioteer
governs with swords, clubs, and whips, iron hooks, whips, and reins, and
various kinds of beatings. The World-Honored One, the great charioteer, abandons all
evil dharmas, and is free from swords, clubs, and whips. He is
truly the right charioteer. To cross water, one needs a bridge or
boat. To straighten an arrow, one needs fire. A carpenter relies on
an axe to be correct. Wisdom is self-disciplined with prajña. If a
person first commits evil, but later stops and does not do it
again, this illuminates the world, like the moon when the clouds have
cleared. If a person first indulges in carelessness, but later stops and
is not careless, with right mindfulness, one leaves behind the poison of
thorns and single-mindedly crosses to the other shore. Having already completed evil
karma, one must fall into evil destinies. But being forgiven by the
Buddha for my sins, I am spared from evil karma. May all
people who hear my words remove their resentful and knotted minds. With
the pure eye of patience, the Buddha says that non-contentiousness is supreme.
