Once, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. At that time, the bhikṣuṇī Śilā, in the morning, put on her robe, took her bowl, entered the city to beg for food, finished eating, washed her bowl, put away her sitting mat, and went to the forest of the blind. At that time, Māra the Evil One thought, "The Śramaṇa Gautama is at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. There is a bhikṣuṇī named Śilā who, in the morning, put on her robe, took her bowl, entered the city to beg for food, finished eating, washed her bowl, put away her sitting mat, and went to the forest of the blind. I shall disturb her." Having thought this, he transformed himself into a young brahmin and went to her, speaking a verse: | 一时,佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园。尔时,石室比丘尼于其晨朝,著衣持钵,入城乞食,食讫洗钵,收摄坐具,向得眼林。尔时,魔王而作是念:「沙门瞿昙在舍卫国祇树给孤独园,中有石室比丘尼,著衣持钵,入城乞食,食讫洗钵,收摄坐具,向得眼林。我当为其而作扰乱。」作是念已,化为摩纳,往至其所,而说偈言: |

When the bhikṣuṇī Śilā heard this verse, she thought, "Who is this? How deceitful! Is it a human or a non-human?" She entered concentration to observe and knew it was Māra the Evil One. She replied in verse: | 时石室比丘尼闻是偈已,而作是念:「此为是谁?甚为欺诈。为是人耶?是非人乎?」入定观察,知是魔王,以偈答言: |

At that time, Māra the Evil One thought, "This bhikṣuṇī knows my mind well." He was distressed, remorseful, ashamed, and returned to his palace. | 尔时,魔王而作是念:「此比丘尼善知我心。」忧愁悔恨,惭愧还宫。 |
