Thus have I heard: |
Once, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "In the past, there was a yakṣa whose appearance was very small, his complexion was ugly, his body was black, and people did not like to see him. He sat on the seat of Śakra, the Lord of the Devas. At that time, the thirty-three devas saw this yakṣa sitting in Śakra's place and were all greatly angry and reviled him in various ways. At that time, the evil appearance of the yakṣa gradually disappeared and good features appeared, gradually growing larger. The devas reviled and became more and more angry, and the yakṣa's body became even larger and his complexion became more radiant. The devas went together to Śakra and said to him, 'There is a yakṣa who is extremely ugly, his body is very small, and he sits in Śakra's place. We devas all revile him together, but the yakṣa's complexion becomes better and his body gradually grows larger.' Śakra said, 'There is this yakṣa who receives revilement and his appearance becomes better. It is called 'assisting others in anger.' At that time, Śakra returned to his seat, bared his right shoulder, held an incense burner in his hand, and said to the yakṣa, 'Great Sage! I am Śakra, the Lord of the Devas! I am Śakra, the Lord of the Devas!' He proclaimed his name three times, and the yakṣa became smaller and his appearance became more evil, and then disappeared. Śakra returned to his seat and told the devas, 'From now on, do not give rise to anger. If there is an evil opponent, do not add anger.' He then spoke a verse: | 一时,佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园。

The Buddha told the bhikṣus, "Śakra, the Lord of the Devas, dwells in the heavenly realm and enjoys the pleasures of the senses, yet he is still able to control anger. He also always praises those who control anger. How much more so for you bhikṣus who have faith in leaving home life and entering the path, shaving your beards and hair, and donning the Dharma robes? You should not give rise to anger, but praise those who are free from anger. Therefore, bhikṣus, you should train in this way." |
At that time, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha said and joyfully practiced it. |
