Thus have I heard:

Once, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. At that time, King Prasenajit was in a quiet place, thinking, "Is there one Dharma that can bring present benefits and future benefits?" Having thought this, he went to where the Buddha was, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, sat to one side, and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! Is there one Dharma that can bring present benefits and future benefits?"

The Buddha told the king, "I have one Dharma that, when practiced and expanded, brings much benefit in the present and future. It is called the Dharma of not being negligent. Practicing it brings present benefits and future benefits. It is like the great earth, which can produce a hundred grains. All grasses and trees and all good dharmas also arise from not being negligent. Not being negligent increases and expands. Great King! It is like the great earth, where all seeds grow and increase. All sentient beings are also like this, arising from not being negligent. Among all root fragrances, black solid fragrance is the best. This is also so. As explained above, all those who practice good conduct, not being negligent is their root and the cause of their birth. Therefore, great king, you should now cultivate the Dharma of not being negligent, and also rely on the Dharma of not being negligent. If the king does so, his queens and consorts will also not be negligent; his princes, ministers, and officials will also be the same. If they are not negligent, it is to guard the inner and outer palace. Because of not being negligent, the granaries will be full. If the king is not negligent, it is to protect himself and also to protect all.

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:

Not being negligent is supreme, while being negligent is much criticized. In
this life, not being negligent, in the next life, one attains great
benefit. The benefits of this life and the other world, understanding the
benefits of both, is called a hero, the practice of the wise.

Having spoken this, the Buddha finished. The bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, rejoiced and upheld it.
