SA-2 98（九八）

Thus have I heard:

如是我闻：

Once, the Buddha was traveling in the country of Kosala. At that time, the World-Honored One was staying on the banks of the Sundari River. There was a Brahmin who lived on the other side of the river. He went to where the Buddha was, exchanged greetings, and sat to one side. He then said to the Buddha, "Do you wish to enter this river to bathe?" The Buddha asked, "What benefits are there in entering this river to bathe?" The Brahmin said, "This river is where ancient sages crossed. If one enters to bathe, it can remove all evils, purify and cleanse, and is called greatly auspicious."

一时，佛游拘萨罗国。尔时，世尊止于孙陀利河岸。时彼岸侧有住婆罗门，往诣佛所，问讯已讫，在一面坐，即白佛言：「汝欲入此河中浴耶？」佛问之曰：「入此河浴有何利益？」婆罗门言：「今此河者，古仙度处。若入洗浴，能除众恶，清净鲜洁，名为大吉。」

Having heard this, the Buddha spoke a verse:

佛闻是已，即说偈言：

「非彼孙陀利，　　得闭及恒河，竭阇婆钵提，　　入是诸河浴，终不能洗除，　　已作之恶业。大力钵健提，　　并与愚下劣，设共于中洗，　　乃至百千年，终不能除恶、　　烦恼之垢秽。若人心真净，　　具戒常布萨，能修净业者，　　常得具足戒。不杀及不盗，　　不婬不妄语，能信罪福者，　　终不嫉于他，法水澡尘垢，　　宜于是处洗。虽于孙陀利、　　竭阇等诸河，此皆是世水，　　饮之及洗浴，不能除垢污，　　并祛诸恶业，饮浴何用为？　　实语而调顺，舍瞋不害物，　　此是真净水。若入净戒河，　　洗除诸尘劳，虽不除外秽，　　能祛于内垢。凶崄残害者，　　𪧀愚造诸恶，如是等不净，　　秽污垢恶者，水正洗身垢，　　不能除此恶。」

The brāhman, having heard the Buddha's words, praised, "Excellent! Excellent! Indeed as you have said. Bathing can remove bodily impurities, but it cannot remove the evil deeds of the wicked."

时，婆罗门闻佛所说，赞言：「善哉！善哉！诚如所言。夫洗浴者，能除身垢。为恶业者，非洗能除。」
