Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
Once, the Buddha was staying at Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in Śrāvastī. At that time, there was a young and newly ordained bhikṣu who had just entered the monastic life in this Dharma and Vinaya. He had few acquaintances, was a lone traveler, and had no one to provide for him. He was staying in a guest house in a remote village, and was gravely ill. | 一时，佛住舍卫国祇树给孤独园。时，有异比丘年少新学，于此法、律出家未久，少知识，独一客旅，无人供给，住边聚落客僧房中，疾病困笃。 |
At that time, many bhikṣus went to where the Buddha was, bowed their heads at his feet, sat to one side, and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! There is a young and newly ordained bhikṣu who has just entered the monastic life in this Dharma and Vinaya. He is gravely ill and staying in a guest house in a remote village. Many of these sick bhikṣus die and few survive. Excellent, World-Honored One! Please go to that place out of compassion!" | 时，有众多比丘诣佛所，稽首礼足，却坐一面，白佛言：「世尊！有一比丘年少新学，乃至疾病困笃，住边聚落客僧房中。有是病比丘多死无活。善哉！世尊！往彼住处，以哀愍故！」 |
At that time, the World-Honored One silently accepted. In the afternoon, he arose from meditation and went to that place. | 尔时，世尊默然而许。即日晡时从禅觉，至彼住处。 |
The sick bhikṣu saw from afar that the World-Honored One had arrived and tried to get up from his bed. | 彼病比丘遥见世尊，扶床欲起。 |
The Buddha told the bhikṣu, "Rest, do not get up! How is it? Bhikṣu, can you bear the pain?..." As in the previous Dharma teaching of Cāma, it is extensively explained like this about the three feelings, up to "The pain of illness only increases and does not decrease." | 佛告比丘：「息卧勿起！云何？比丘！苦患宁可忍不？……」如前差摩迦修多罗广说如是三受，乃至「病苦但增不损。」 |
The Buddha told the sick bhikṣu, "I now ask you, answer me as you wish. Do you have any regrets?" | 佛告病比丘：「我今问汝，随意答我。汝得无变悔耶？」 |
The sick bhikṣu said to the Buddha, "Indeed, I have regrets, World-Honored One!" | 病比丘白佛：「实有变悔。世尊！」 |
The Buddha said to the sick bhikṣu, "Have you committed any offenses against the precepts?" | 佛告病比丘：「汝得无犯戒耶？」 |
The sick bhikṣu said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! I have not committed any offenses against the precepts." | 病比丘白佛言：「世尊！实不犯戒。」 |
The Buddha said to the sick bhikṣu, "If you have not committed any offenses against the precepts, why do you regret it?" | 佛告病比丘：「汝若不犯戒，何为变悔？」 |
The sick bhikṣu said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! I have just left home and have not yet attained any extraordinary knowledge and insight. I thought, 'When I die, where will I be reborn?' That is why I regret it." | 病比丘白佛：「世尊！我年幼稚出家未久，于过人法胜妙知见未有所得，我作是念：『命终之时，知生何处？』故生变悔。」 |
The Buddha said to the bhikṣu, "I will ask you now, answer me as you wish. How is it, bhikṣu? Is there eye-consciousness because there is an eye?" | 佛告比丘：「我今问汝，随意答我。云何？比丘！有眼故有眼识耶？」 |
The bhikṣu said to the Buddha, "Yes, World-Honored One!" | 比丘白佛：「如是，世尊！」 |
He further asked, "How is it, bhikṣu? Is there eye-contact and eye-contact as a condition for internal feeling, whether pleasant, painful, or neither pleasant nor painful, because there is eye-consciousness?" | 复问：「比丘！于意云何？有眼识故有眼触、眼触因缘生内受，若苦、若乐、不苦不乐耶？」 |
The bhikṣu said to the Buddha, "Yes, World-Honored One!" The same is said for the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. | 比丘白佛：「如是，世尊！」耳、鼻、舌、身、意亦如是说。 |
"How is it, bhikṣu? If there is no eye, is there no eye-consciousness?" | 「云何？比丘！若无眼则无眼识耶？」 |
The bhikṣu said to the Buddha, "Yes, World-Honored One!" | 比丘白佛：「如是，世尊！」 |
He further asked, "Bhikṣu! If there is no eye-consciousness, is there no eye-contact? If there is no eye-contact, is there no internal feeling born from the condition of eye-contact, whether it be painful, pleasant, or neither painful nor pleasant?" | 复问：「比丘！若无眼识则无眼触耶？若无眼触，则无眼触因缘生内受，若苦、若乐、不苦不乐耶？」 |
The bhikṣu said to the Buddha, "Yes, World-Honored One!" The same is said for the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. | 比丘白佛：「如是，世尊！」耳、鼻、舌、身、意亦如是说。 |
"Therefore, bhikṣu! You should contemplate these teachings well, so that you may attain a good death and a good rebirth in the next world." At that time, the World-Honored One taught the sick bhikṣu in various ways, showing, teaching, illuminating, and delighting him, then rose from his seat and departed. | 「是故，比丘！当善思惟如是法，得善命终，后世亦善。」尔时，世尊为病比丘种种说法，示、教、照、喜已，从坐起去。 |
After the World-Honored One left, the sick bhikṣu soon passed away. At the time of his death, his faculties were joyful, his complexion was clear and pure, and his skin was fair. | 时，病比丘，世尊去后，寻即命终。临命终时，诸根喜悦，颜貌清净，肤色鲜白。 |
At that time, many bhikṣus went to where the Buddha was, bowed their heads at his feet, withdrew and sat to one side, and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! The young bhikṣu who was gravely ill has now passed away. At the time of his death, his faculties were joyful, his complexion was clear and pure, and his skin was fair. How is it, World-Honored One? Where will such a bhikṣu be reborn? How will he take rebirth? What will be his future state?" | 时，众多比丘诣佛所，稽首礼足，退坐一面，白佛言：「世尊！彼年少比丘疾病困笃，尊者今已命终。当命终时，诸根喜悦，颜貌清净，肤色鲜白。云何？世尊！如是比丘当生何处？云何受生？后世云何？」 |
The Buddha told the bhikṣus, "That bhikṣu who has passed away is a true treasure. He heard my teaching of the Dharma, clearly understood it, was fearless in the Dharma, and attained parinirvāṇa. You should only make offerings to his relics." | 佛告诸比丘：「彼命过比丘是真宝物，闻我说法，分明解了，于法无畏，得般涅槃，汝等但当供养舍利。」 |
At that time, the World-Honored One gave the first prediction to that bhikṣu. | 世尊尔时为彼比丘受第一记。 |
After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha had said and joyfully practiced it. | 佛说此经已，诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
