SA 1031（一〇三一） 给孤独

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, Venerable Ānanda heard that the elder Anāthapiṇḍada was suffering from illness. He went to his house. The elder, seeing Ānanda from afar, tried to get up from his bed...and so on, up to the three feelings, as extensively explained in the previous sūtra, up to "The illness only increases and does not decrease."

At that time, Venerable Ānanda said to the elder, "Do not be afraid! If foolish, ignorant ordinary people do not believe in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṃgha, and do not have the holy precepts, then they will be afraid and fear death and the suffering of the next world. But now you have already cut off and know what is to be cut off and known. You have pure faith in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṃgha, and have accomplished the holy precepts."

The elder said to Venerable Ānanda, "What am I afraid of now? When I first saw the World-Honored One in the cold forest cemetery in Rājagṛha, I attained the unshakable faith in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṃgha, and accomplished the holy precepts. Since then, I have given all the wealth in my family to the Buddha, his disciples, bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, and upāsikās."

Venerable Ānanda said, "Excellent! Elder, you yourself have declared this to be the fruit of stream-entry."

The elder said to Venerable Ānanda, "Please take your meal here."

Venerable Ānanda silently accepted the invitation.

He prepared various pure and delicious foods to offer to Venerable Ānanda. After the meal, he further taught the elder various teachings, showing, guiding, illuminating, and delighting him. Then he rose from his seat and departed.
