Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha.

At that time, there was a young boy named Changshou, the grandson of Elder Shruti, who was seriously ill.

At that time, the World-Honored One heard that the young boy Changshou was seriously ill. In the morning, he put on his robe, took his bowl, entered Rājagṛha to beg for food, and gradually arrived at the house of the young boy Changshou. The young boy Changshou saw the World-Honored One from afar, supported his bed to get up...and so on, up to explaining the three feelings, as extensively explained in the Cāmadevī-sūtra, up to "The suffering of illness only increases and does not decrease. Therefore, young boy! You should study thus: 'Undefiled faith in the Buddha, undefiled faith in the Dharma and Saṃgha, and the accomplishment of the noble precepts.' You should study thus."

The young boy said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! As the World-Honored One has said, the four undefiled faiths, I now have them all. I always have undefiled faith in the Buddha, undefiled faith in the Dharma and Saṃgha, and the accomplishment of the noble precepts."

The Buddha told the young boy, "You should rely on the four undefiled faiths and cultivate the six aspects of clear understanding above. What are the six? They are the thought of impermanence of all conditioned phenomena, the thought of suffering in impermanence, the thought of no-self in suffering, the thought of contemplating food, the thought of the unsatisfactoriness of the entire world, and the thought of death."

The young boy said to the Buddha, "As the World-Honored One has said, relying on the four undefiled faiths to cultivate the six aspects of clear understanding, I now have them all. However, I have this thought: 'After my death, I do not know what will happen to my grandfather, the elder Sudatta.'"

At that time, the elder Sudatta said to the young boy Changshou, "You should remember me for now. Now listen to the World-Honored One's teaching of the Dharma, contemplate and remember it, and you will attain long-term benefits, peace, and happiness."

At that time, the young boy Changshou said, "I will always have the thought of impermanence, the thought of suffering in impermanence, the thought of no-self in suffering, the thought of observing food, the thought of the impermanence of all worldly things, and the thought of death."

The Buddha told the young boy, "You should now declare the fruit of the second stage of sainthood."

The young boy Changshou said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! Please accept my invitation to stay and take a meal at my house." At that time, the World-Honored One silently accepted.

The young boy Changshou then prepared various pure and delicious foods and respectfully made offerings. After the World-Honored One had eaten, he further spoke the Dharma for the young boy, showing, teaching, illuminating, and delighting him. Then he rose from his seat and departed.
