Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying in the NiKuLa grove in the country of Kapilavastu.

At that time, a Śākya named Śāla was gravely ill.

At that time, the World-Honored One heard that the Śākya Śāla was gravely ill. In the morning, he put on his robe, took his bowl, and entered the country of Kapilavastu to beg for alms. He arrived at the house of the Śākya Śāla. The Śākya Śāla saw the World-Honored One from afar and supported his bed to rise... up to explaining the three feelings, as extensively explained in the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, up to "The suffering only increases and does not decrease. Therefore, Śākya Śāla, you should train like this: 'Undefiled faith in the Buddha, undefiled faith in the Dharma and Saṅgha, and the accomplishment of noble precepts.'"

The Śākya Śāla said to the Buddha, "As the World-Honored One has said, 'Undefiled faith in the Buddha, undefiled faith in the Dharma and Saṅgha, and the accomplishment of noble precepts,' I have all of these. I always have undefiled faith in the Buddha, undefiled faith in the Dharma and Saṅgha, and the accomplishment of noble precepts."

The Buddha told the Śākya Śāla, "Therefore, you should rely on undefiled faith in the Buddha, undefiled faith in the Dharma and Saṅgha, and the accomplishment of noble precepts, and cultivate the five joyful things above. What are the five? They are recollecting the Tathāgata's affairs, up to the Dharma that one has given to oneself."

The Śākya Śāla said to the Buddha, "As the World-Honored One has said, relying on the four undefiled faiths to cultivate the five joyful things, I also have them. I always recollect the Tathāgata's affairs, up to the Dharma that I have given to myself."

The Buddha said, "Excellent! Excellent! You now declare for yourself the fruit of the once-returner."

Śāla said to the Buddha, "I only wish that the World-Honored One would now accept a meal at my house." At that time, the World-Honored One silently consented.

The elder Śāla then prepared various pure and delicious foods and respectfully made offerings. After the World-Honored One had eaten, he further spoke various teachings to the elder Śāla, showing, teaching, illuminating, and delighting him. Then he rose from his seat and departed.
