Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "There are causes of evil karma, evil intentions, and evil views. When such beings' bodies perish and their lives end, they will definitely fall into the evil realms of hell. It is like a round bead thrown into the air, rolling on the ground when it falls, not staying in one place. In the same way, due to the causes of evil karma, evil intentions, and evil views, when the body perishes and life ends, one will definitely fall into hell, with no place to stay.

What is evil karma? It refers to killing, up to frivolous speech..." and so on, as explained above. "This is called evil karma. What is an evil mind? It refers to a mind of greed and anger..." and so on, as explained above. "This is called an evil mind. What are evil views? It refers to wrong and inverted..." and so on, as explained above. "This is called evil views. These are called the causes of evil karma, evil mind, and evil views. When the body perishes and life ends, one will definitely be reborn in the evil realms of hell. The causes of good karma, good mind, and good views, when the body perishes and life ends, one will definitely be reborn in the good realms of heaven.

Brahmin! What is good karma? It refers to refraining from killing, not enjoying killing, up to not speaking frivolously. This is called good karma. What is a good mind? It refers to non-greed and non-anger. This is called a good mind. What is good view? It refers to right view, not inverted, up to seeing the non-acceptance of future existence. This is called good view. These are called the causes of good karma, good mind, and good view. When the body perishes and life ends, one will be reborn in heaven. It is like a four-sided gem thrown into the air, landing wherever it falls. In the same way, these three good causes, wherever one is reborn, will be at ease.

The Buddha spoke this sūtra. The bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and upheld them.
