Thus have I heard:	如是我闻：
At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.	一时，佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园。
At that time, Venerable Saṅgārava was traveling among the people of Kosala and arrived at Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. There were two monks named Saṅgārava in Śrāvastī. They heard that monk Saṅgārava was traveling among the people of Kosala and arrived at Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. Having heard this, they put on fine clothes, adorned themselves with flower garlands, and brought their children to the Jetavana, to the room of monk Saṅgārava.	时，有尊者僧迦蓝于拘萨罗人间游行，至舍卫国祇树给孤独园。彼僧迦蓝比丘有本二，在舍卫国中，闻僧迦蓝比丘于拘萨罗人间游行，至舍卫国祇树给孤独园。闻已，著好衣服，庄严华璎，抱其儿来诣祇洹，至僧迦蓝比丘房前。
At that time, Venerable Saṅgārava came out of his room and was walking in the open air. The two monks came before him and said, "This child is young. You have renounced the householder life. Who will support him?"	尔时，尊者僧迦蓝出房露地经行。时，彼本二来到其前，作是言：「此儿幼小，汝舍出家，谁当养活？」
Venerable Saṅgārava did not speak to them. When they repeated this a second and a third time, he still did not speak to them.	时，僧迦蓝比丘不共语。如是再三，亦不共语。
The two monks said, "We have spoken to you twice and three times, but you do not speak to us. You do not even look at us. We will leave the child here." They left the child at the end of the walking path and said, "Monk! This is your son. You raise him yourself. We are leaving now."	时，彼本二作如是言：「我再三告，不与我语，不见顾视，我今置儿。」著经行道头而去，言：「沙门！此是汝子，汝自养活，我今舍去。」
Venerable Saṅgārava also did not look at his son.	尊者僧迦蓝亦不顾视其子。
The two monks said again, "This monk does not look at the child at all. He must have attained the difficult state of an ascetic. Good! Monk! You must have attained liberation." Their wish not being fulfilled, they took the child and left.	彼本二复言：「是沙门今于此儿都不顾视，彼必得仙人难得之处。善哉！沙门！必得解脱。」情愿不遂，抱子而去。
At that time, the World-Honored One entered the right concentration of the day. With his divine ear surpassing that of humans, he heard what Venerable Saṅgārava and the two monks said, and then spoke a verse:	尔时，世尊入昼正受，以天耳过人之耳，闻尊者僧迦蓝本二所说，即说偈言：
The coming one is not joyful, the going one is not sorrowful. In the world, being united, liberated, and not attached, I say that bhikṣu is a true brāhmaṇa. The coming one is not joyful, the going one is not sorrowful. Not defiled, also not sorrowful, the two minds are both tranquil. I say that bhikṣu is a true brāhmaṇa.	「来者不欢喜，　　去亦不忧戚。于世间和合，　　解脱不染著。我说彼比丘，　　为真婆罗门。来者不欢喜，　　去亦不忧戚。不染亦无忧，　　二心俱寂静，我说是比丘，　　是真婆罗门。」
Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha said, "Venerable Saṅgārava, having heard the Buddha's words, was delighted and followed the Buddha's words. He bowed and departed.	佛说此经已，尊者僧迦蓝闻佛所说，欢喜随喜，作礼而去。
