Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. | |
At that time, Venerable Dīghanakha went to where the Buddha was, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, stepped back to one side, and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! I wish to attain parinirvāṇa in front of the Buddha." |
The World-Honored One remained silent. He asked this three times, and the Buddha told Dīghanakha, "This is the way of conditioned phenomena. | 世尊默然。如是三启,佛告陀骠摩罗子:「此有为诸行,法应如是!」 |
At that time, Venerable Dīghanakha immediately entered samādhi in front of the Buddha. As he entered samādhi, he rose into the sky in the eastern direction and manifested the four dignified deportments of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. He entered the fire samādhi, emitting fire from his body, with the entire body blazing with light and flames in blue, yellow, red, white, and crystal-like colors. Fire emitted from the lower part of his body burned his body, while water emitted from the upper part of his body sprinkled his body. Sometimes fire emitted from the upper part of his body burned the lower part of his body, while water emitted from the lower part of his body sprinkled the upper part of his body. He manifested various transformations in the ten directions. Then, in the sky, he emitted fire from his body and burned himself to parinirvāṇa, without remainder, extinguishing and pacifying, leaving no trace. It was like a lamp in the sky, with the oil and wick both extinguished. Dīghanakha's parinirvāṇa in the sky, with body and mind both extinguished, was also like this. At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying: | 尔时,尊者陀骠摩罗子即于佛前,入于三昧,如其正受,向于东方,升虚空行,现四威仪,行、住、坐、卧,入火三昧,身下出火,举身洞然,光焰四布,青、黄、赤、白、颇梨红色。

Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha said to the bhikṣus, "The bhikṣus should practice in this way." The bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and practiced accordingly. |
