SA 1086（一〇八六） 波旬

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha.

At that time, the World-Honored One arose in the night to walk back and forth. In the latter part of the night, he washed his feet, entered the room, sat upright with his body composed, and focused his mind in concentration.

Then Māra Pāpīyas thought: "Now the Śramaṇa Gautama is walking back and forth in the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. In the latter part of the night, he washed his feet, entered the room, sat upright with his body composed, and focused his mind in concentration. I shall now go and disturb him." He then transformed himself into a young man and stood before the Buddha, speaking a verse:

My mind is in the sky, holding a long rope net
below, just wanting to bind the Śramaṇa, not letting you escape.

At that time, the World-Honored One thought: "The evil Māra Pāpīyas wants to cause trouble." He then spoke a verse:

I have said that in the world, the five desires are
the sixth intention. I have forever left them, all suffering has
been cut off. I have already left those desires, mind, consciousness
and thought have also ceased. Pāpīyas, I know you. Quickly vanish from here.

At that time, Māra Pāpīyas thought: "The śramaṇa already knows my mind." Ashamed and distressed, he immediately disappeared.
