SA 1096（一〇九六） 绳索

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Deer Park at the Sage's Abode in the country of Varanasi.

At that time, the World-Honored One said to the bhikṣus, "I have already been liberated from the snares of humans and gods. You have also been liberated from the snares of humans and gods. You should go among humans, liberating many, benefiting many, bringing peace and happiness to humans and gods. You do not need to travel together, but go one by one. I will also go to the Uḍḍiyāna region to wander among humans."

At that time, Māra Pāpīyān had this thought: "The Śramaṇa Gautama is staying at the Deer Park in the Sage's Abode in the country of Varanasi, teaching the śrāvakas thus: 'I have already been liberated from the snares of humans and gods. You can also. You should each go among humans to teach and transform. I will also go to the Uḍḍiyāna region to wander among humans.' I should go now to create obstacles for him." He then transformed into a young man, stood in front of the Buddha, and spoke a verse:

Not being liberated, thinking one is liberated, calling oneself
liberated, is greatly bound. I will not release you now.

At that time, the World-Honored One had this thought: "The evil Māra Pāpīyān wants to create disturbances." He then spoke a verse:

I have already been liberated from all the ropes of humans
and gods. I know you, Pāpīyān, you should disappear on your own.

At that time, Māra Pāpīyān thought: "The Śramaṇa Gautama already knows my mind." He was inwardly distressed and disappeared.
