Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was staying at the Śākya Stone Master Śākya village. At that time, many bhikṣus gathered in the Dharma hall to make robes.

At that time, Māra Pāpīyān thought: "Now the Śramaṇa Gautama is staying at the Śākya Stone Master Śākya village, and many bhikṣus have gathered in the Dharma hall to make robes. I should go there now to create obstacles for them." He transformed himself into the appearance of a young brāhman, with long matted hair, wearing a fur robe, and holding a staff in his hand. He went to the Dharma hall and stood silently in front of the many bhikṣus. After a while, he said to the bhikṣus: "You young ones have left home, with fair skin and black hair, in the prime of your youth. You should enjoy the five desires and adorn yourselves. Why do you go against your relatives and leave your clans, weeping and parting, to believe in non-home and leave home to study the path? Why do you abandon the happiness of this world and seek the happiness of the other world at the wrong time?"

The bhikṣus said to the brāhman: "We do not abandon the happiness of this world to seek the happiness of the other world at the wrong time. Rather, we abandon the happiness of the wrong time to attain the happiness of this world."

Māra again asked: "How do you abandon the happiness of the wrong time to attain the happiness of this world?"

The bhikṣu replied: "As the World-Honored One has said, the happiness of the other world has little taste and much suffering, little benefit and much harm. The World-Honored One has spoken of the happiness of this world as being free from all burning, not dependent on time, able to be self-realized, and observed through one's own realization. Brāhman, this is called the happiness of this world."

At that time, the brāhman shook his head three times and became mute. He struck the ground with his staff and then disappeared.

At that time, the bhikṣus were terrified and their body hairs stood on end. "What kind of brāhman image is this, coming here to perform this transformation?" They then went to where the Buddha was, bowed their heads at his feet, withdrew and sat to one side, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! We, many bhikṣus, gathered in the Dharma hall to make robes. A strong and young brāhman, with a topknot of matted hair, came to us and said: 'You young ones who have left home...' As above, it is extensively explained, up to shaking his head three times and becoming mute, striking the ground with his staff, and then disappearing. We were then terrified and our body hairs stood on end. What kind of brāhman image is this, coming to perform this transformation?"

The Buddha told the bhikṣus: "This is not a brāhman, but Māra Pāpīyas who has come to you, wanting to cause trouble." At that time, the World-Honored One then spoke a verse, saying:

All suffering and distress arise from desire. Knowing the
world is full of swords and thorns, who would
delight in desire? Perceiving the world as having more
all become swords and thorns. Therefore, the wise should
diligently subdue themselves. A huge accumulation of gold, like
the king of the snow mountains, one person enjoying
it still feels unsatisfied. Therefore, the wise should cultivate equal observation.

Having spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha said and joyfully upheld it.
