Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at the Śākya Stone Master Śākya village.

At that time, Venerable Sudinna, in the morning, put on his robe, took his bowl, and entered the Śākya village of Stone Master to beg for alms. After eating, he returned to the monastery, put away his robe and bowl, washed his feet, took his sitting mat, placed it on his right shoulder, entered the forest, sat under a tree, and practiced daytime meditation. He thought: "I have gained great benefits! To have gone forth and studied the true Dharma and Vinaya; I have gained great benefits! To have encountered the great teacher, the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One; I have gained great benefits! To be among the virtuous, upright, virtuous, and truly good Sangha. I will now attain a virtuous death, and in the future I will also be virtuous."

At that time, Māra Pāpīyān thought: "Now the Śramaṇa Gautama is going to the Śākya village of Stone Master. He has a disciple named Sudinna who is putting on his robe and taking his bowl..." and so on, in detail, up to "he will attain a virtuous death and be virtuous in the future. I should go now to create obstacles for him." He transformed himself into a huge body, strong and powerful, frightening to behold, able to overturn and shake the earth, and went to where the bhikṣu Sudinna was.

The bhikṣu Sudinna saw from afar the huge, brave, and strong man and was immediately terrified. He got up from his seat, went to where the Buddha was, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, stood to one side, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! I now put on my robe and take my bowl..." and so on, in detail, up to "he will attain a virtuous death and be virtuous in the future. I saw a huge man, brave and strong, able to shake the earth. Seeing him, I was terrified, my heart trembled and my hair stood on end."

The Buddha told Sudinna: "This is not a huge man. It is Māra Pāpīyān who wants to create trouble. You should go back and sit under that tree and cultivate the previous samādhi. Act on him and you will be free from suffering."

Then Venerable Sudinna returned to his original place. In the morning, he put on his robe, took his bowl, and entered the Śākya village of Śrāvastī to beg for food. After eating, he returned to the monastery... and so on, in detail, up to "he will attain a virtuous death and be virtuous in the future."

Then Māra Pāpīyān again thought: "This Śramaṇa Gautama is staying with the Śākyas, and he has a disciple named Sudinna..." and so on, in detail, up to "he will attain a virtuous death and be virtuous in the future. I should go now to create obstacles for him." He again transformed into a huge body, vigorous and powerful, able to shake the earth, and stood in front of him.

Venerable Sudinna also saw him from afar and spoke a verse:

I have renounced the household life with right faith, and am studying the
path. I am mindful and focused on the priceless treasure of the Buddha
No matter what form you change into, my mind will not be swayed
I am aware that you are an illusion, and you can then disappear from here.

At that time, Māra Pāpīyas thought, "This śramaṇa already knows my mind." He was inwardly distressed and disappeared.
