Thus have I heard: |
Once, the Buddha was staying in the wilderness near Rājagṛha, together with a group of six hundred bhikṣus. He spoke to the bhikṣus about the origination of the six sense bases, the origination of contact, and the cessation of contact. |
At that time, Māra Pāpīyān had this thought: "Now the Śramaṇa Gautama is staying in the wilderness near Rājagṛha, together with a group of six hundred bhikṣus. He is teaching them that the six sense bases are the origination of contact and the cessation of contact. I should go there now to create obstacles for him." He transformed himself into a strong man with a large body, brave and vigorous, able to shake the earth with his strength, and came to where the Buddha was. |
Those bhikṣus saw from afar the strong man with a large body, brave and vigorous. Seeing him, they became frightened and their body hairs stood on end. They said to each other: "What is that? Its appearance is frightening. |
At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus: "This is Māra the Evil One, who wants to create disturbances. |
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying: |

|
At that time, Māra Pāpīyān thought, "The Śramaṇa Gautama already knows my mind." He was inwardly distressed and disappeared. | |
