Thus have I heard: |
Once, the Buddha was staying on Mount Makura. At that time, there was an attendant monk named Ratha. | |
At that time, the World-Honored One said to the monk Ratha, "Monks! All forms, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or subtle, beautiful or ugly, far or near, should be seen as Māra. Feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or subtle, beautiful or ugly, far or near, should all be seen as Māra. Ratha, what do you think? Are forms permanent or impermanent?" |
He replied, "Impermanent, World-Honored One!" | |
"If it is impermanent, is it suffering?" | 「 |
He replied, "It is suffering, World-Honored One!" | |
"If it is impermanent and suffering, it is a changing and transforming phenomenon. Would the learned noble disciples see a self in it?" |
He replied, "No, World-Honored One!" | |
So it is with feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. Therefore, Ratthapala, the learned noble disciples become disenchanted with form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. Being disenchanted, they do not delight in them. Not delighting, they are liberated. With liberation, they know and see: 'My birth is ended, the holy life has been established, what was to be done has been done, there is no more of this state.' |
Having spoken this sūtra, Venerable Ratthapala was delighted and joyfully carried out what was taught. | |
