Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | 一时,佛住舍卫国祇树给孤独园。 |
At that time, a certain son of heaven, with an extremely handsome appearance, came to where the Buddha was in the latter part of the night. He bowed his head at the Buddha's feet and sat to one side. The light from his body illuminated Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma. | 时,] cf.【丽】有一天子,容色绝妙,于后夜时来诣佛所,稽首佛足,退坐一面。身诸光明遍照祇树给孤独园。 |
At that time, the son of heaven said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! Bhikṣu! Does the bhikṣu cross the swift-flowing stream?" | 时,彼天子白佛言:「世尊!比丘!比丘度驶流耶?」 |
The Buddha said, "So it is, son of heaven!" | 佛言:「如是,天子!」 |
The son of heaven further asked, "Without grasping and without abiding, does one cross the swift-flowing stream?" | 天子复问:「无所攀缘,亦无所住,度驶流耶?」 |
The Buddha said, "So it is, son of heaven!" | 佛言:「如是,天子!」 |
The son of heaven further asked, "Without grasping and without abiding, how does one cross the swift-flowing stream?" | 天子复问:「无所攀缘,亦无所住而度驶流,其义云何?」 |
The Buddha said, "Son of heaven! If I embrace in this way and advance in this way, I will not be swept away by the water. If I do not embrace in this way and do not advance in this way, I will be swept away by the water. Thus, son of heaven! This is called without grasping and without abiding, crossing the swift-flowing stream." | 佛言:「天子!我如是如是抱,如是如是直进,则不为水之所漂。如是如是不抱。如是如是不直进,则为水所漂。如是,天子!名为无所攀缘,亦无所住而度驶流。」 |
At that time, the son of heaven again spoke a verse, saying: | 时,彼天子复说偈言: |

At that time, the son of heaven, having heard the Buddha's teaching, rejoiced and was delighted. He bowed his head at the Buddha's feet and then disappeared. | 时,彼天子闻佛所说,欢喜随喜,稽首佛足,即没不现。 |
