Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at the Golden-clad Mountain in Rājagṛha, in the cave where the Golden-clad spirits lived.

At that time, the World-Honored One was pierced in the foot by a golden spear. Not long after, he experienced physical pain, but he was able to let go of his mind, with right knowledge and right mindfulness, enduring and at ease, without any thought of retreat.

There were eight mountain spirit princes who thought, "Today the World-Honored One is staying at the Golden-clad Mountain in Rājagṛha, in the cave where the Golden-clad spirits live. He was pierced in the foot by a golden spear and experienced physical pain, but he was able to let go of his mind, with right mindfulness and right knowledge, enduring and at ease, without any retreat. We should go before him and praise him." Having thought this, they went to where the Buddha was, bowed their heads at his feet, and stood to one side.

The first spirit prince spoke a verse in praise, saying:

The Śramaṇa Gautama, the lion among
men, though his body suffers pain
endures and is at ease, with
right knowledge and right mindfulness, without any retreat.

The second celestial prince also praised, saying:

The great being, the great dragon, the great being, the
bull king, the great man's courage and strength, the great
man's good horse, the great man's leader, the great man's victor.

The third celestial prince also praised, saying:

This śramaṇa Gautama, the man's lotus, with the arising of various pains
in the body, is able to practice the mind of giving up
abides in right knowledge and right mindfulness, endures and comforts himself, without any decrease.

The fourth celestial prince also praised, saying: "If there are those who go against and criticize what is said by the śramaṇa Gautama, the man's lotus, know that they will for a long time not obtain beneficial happiness, except for those who do not know the truth."

The fifth celestial prince also spoke a verse, saying:

Contemplating that samādhi concentration, well abiding in the right
absorption, liberated and free from all defilements, not elated
or depressed, the mind peacefully abides, and attains mental liberation.

The sixth celestial prince also spoke a verse, saying:

Having gone through five hundred years, reciting the Brāhman scriptures
diligently practicing austerities, not understanding liberation and freedom from defilements
this is the inferior class, not attaining the other shore.

The seventh celestial prince also spoke a verse, saying:

Being pressed by desire, bound by precepts, bravely
practicing austerities, going through a hundred years, the
mind not liberated, not free from defilements, this
is the inferior class, not crossing to the other shore.

The eighth celestial prince also spoke a verse, saying:

The mind dwells in arrogance and desire, unable to subdue itself
not attaining the concentration and equipoise of the sage, dwelling alone
in the mountains and forests, the mind always negligent, not able
to cross to the other shore of the army of the
demon of death.

At that time, the eight celestial princes of the mountain spirits each praised in this way, bowed their heads at the Buddha's feet, and then disappeared.
