Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha.

At that time, there was a nun named Śākalikā who was staying among the nuns in the royal garden. She was respected and offered to by the people of Rājagṛha, just like an arhat.

At another time, the people of Rājagṛha gathered for a great festival on an auspicious day. On that day, they neglected to make offerings to the nun. A certain spirit, out of respect for the nun, went from house to house in the streets of Rājagṛha, reciting a verse:

The people of Rājagṛha are drunk and sleeping, not diligently making
offerings to Śākalikā. Because she has well cultivated the faculties, she
is called Śākalikā. She well preaches the Dharma of detachment, the
cool place of nirvāṇa. Listening to her teachings, one is never
tired of it all day long. Riding on the wisdom of
listening to the Dharma, one can cross the stream of birth
and death. It is like a sea merchant relying on the
power of the horse king.

At that time, an upāsaka offered a robe to Śākalikā, and another upāsaka offered food.

At that time, the ghost spoke a verse, saying:

The wise upāsaka obtains abundant blessings and benefits, offering
clothes to Śākalikā, because he is free from afflictions
The wise upāsaka obtains abundant blessings and benefits, offering
food to Śākalikā, because he is free from hoarding.

At that time, after the ghost spoke this verse, he disappeared.
