Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. | |
At that time, there was a nun named Śākalikā who was staying among the nuns in the royal garden. She was respected and offered to by the people of Rājagṛha, just like an arhat. |
At another time, the people of Rājagṛha gathered for a great festival on an auspicious day. On that day, they neglected to make offerings to the nun. A certain spirit, out of respect for the nun, went from house to house in the streets of Rājagṛha, reciting a verse: | 又于一时,王舍城人于一吉星日欢集大会,即于是日阙不供养。
At that time, an upāsaka offered a robe to Śākalikā, and another upāsaka offered food. | |
At that time, the ghost spoke a verse, saying: |
At that time, after the ghost spoke this verse, he disappeared. | |
