Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. | 一时，佛住王舍城迦兰陀竹园。 |
At that time, Venerable Śāriputra and Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana were staying on Vulture Peak Mountain. | 尔时，尊者舍利弗、尊者大目揵连住耆阇崛山中。 |
At that time, Venerable Śāriputra had just shaved his beard and hair. There were two ghosts, Kaṭa and Upakaṭa. The ghost Upakaṭa saw that Venerable Śāriputra had just shaved his beard and hair, and said to the ghost Kaṭa, "I will now go and strike that śramaṇa on the head." | 时，尊者舍利弗新剃须发。时，有伽咤及优波伽咤鬼。优波伽咤鬼见尊者舍利弗新剃须发，语伽咤鬼言：「我今当往打彼沙门头。」 |
The ghost Kaṭa said, "You, Upakaṭa! Do not speak like that. This śramaṇa is a great virtuous one with great power. You will not gain great harm and suffering for a long time!" He said this three times. | 伽咤鬼言：「汝优波伽咤！莫作是语。此沙门大德大力，汝莫长夜得大不饶益苦！」如是再三说。 |
At that time, the ghost Upakaṭa did not heed the words of the ghost Kaṭa three times, and immediately struck Venerable Śāriputra on the head with his hand. After striking, he immediately called out, "Burn me, Kaṭa! Boil me, Kaṭa!" After calling out three times, he sank into the ground and fell into the Avīci hell. | 时，优波伽咤鬼再三不用伽咤鬼语，即以手打尊者舍利弗头。打已，寻自唤言：「烧我，伽咤！煮我，伽咤！」再三唤已，陷入地中，堕阿毘地狱。 |
Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana heard the sound of Venerable Śāriputra being struck by a ghost, and immediately went to where Venerable Śāriputra was. He asked Venerable Śāriputra, "How is it, Venerable One? Is the pain bearable?" | 尊者大目揵连闻尊者舍利弗为鬼所打声已，即往诣尊者舍利弗所，问尊者舍利弗言：「云何？尊者！苦痛可忍不？」 |
Venerable Śāriputra replied, "Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana! Although the pain is painful, the mind can endure it and does not lead to great suffering." | 尊者舍利弗答言：「尊者大目揵连！虽复苦痛，意能堪忍，不至大苦。」 |
Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to Venerable Śāriputra, "How amazing! Venerable Śāriputra is truly a great virtuous one with great strength. If this ghost were to strike Vulture Peak with his hand, he could shatter it like chaff, let alone strike a person without causing pain?" | 尊者大目揵连语尊者舍利弗言：「奇哉！尊者舍利弗！真为大德大力，此鬼若以手打耆阇崛山者，能令碎如糠糟，况复打人而不苦痛？」 |
At that time, Venerable Śāriputra said to Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, "I am not really in great pain." | 尔时，尊者舍利弗语尊者大目揵连：「我实不大苦痛。」 |
At that time, Venerable Śāriputra and Mahāmaudgalyāyana consoled each other. | 时，尊者舍利弗、大目揵连共相慰劳。 |
At that time, the World-Honored One, hearing their conversation with his divine ear, spoke a verse: | 时，世尊以天耳闻其语声，闻已即说偈言： |

Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha finished. The bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and upheld them. | 佛说此经已，诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
