Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Buddha was staying at the Kajaśirīśa Shrine, together with a thousand monks, all of whom were former matted-hair ascetics. | |
At that time, the World-Honored One used three kinds of manifestations to teach and transform the thousand monks. What were the three? The manifestation of supernatural powers, the manifestation of knowing others' minds, and the manifestation of instruction. |
As for the manifestation of supernatural powers, the World-Honored One manifested entering into various meditative absorptions according to their needs, flying through the air to the east, performing the four dignified postures of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, entering the fire samadhi, emitting various colored firelight - blue, yellow, red, white, pink, and crystal-like - water and fire appearing together, fire coming out from below the body and water from above, fire from above and water from below, and the same in all directions. At that time, after the World-Honored One had performed various supernatural transformations, he sat among the assembly. This is called the manifestation of supernatural powers. |
As for the manifestation of knowing others' minds, it is like knowing their minds, intentions, and consciousness, knowing what they should think and what they should not think, what they should abandon, and what they should realize and abide in with the body. This is called the manifestation of knowing others' minds. |
As for the manifestation of instruction, it is as the World-Honored One said: "Bhikshus! Everything is burning. What is burning? The eyes are burning, and so are forms, eye consciousness, eye contact, and the feelings that arise from eye contact, whether pleasant, unpleasant, or neither. The same goes for the ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. The dharmas, mind consciousness, mind contact, and the feelings that arise from mind contact, whether pleasant, unpleasant, or neither, are also burning. What burns? The fire of craving burns, the fire of anger burns, the fire of delusion burns, and the fire of birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and distress burns. |
At that time, the thousand bhikshus heard what the Buddha said, and their defilements ceased, their minds were liberated. After the Buddha spoke this sutra, the bhikshus heard what the Buddha said and joyfully practiced it. |
