Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus: "One should contemplate form correctly, knowing it to be impermanent. Why is that? Bhikṣus, if one contemplates form correctly and knows it to be impermanent, then desire and greed for form will be cut off. If desire and greed are cut off, it is said that the mind is liberated.

One should contemplate feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness correctly, knowing them to be impermanent. Why is that? If one contemplates consciousness correctly and knows it to be impermanent, then desire and greed for consciousness will be cut off. If desire and greed are cut off, it is said that the mind is liberated.

If one who is liberated in this way wishes to realize it for oneself, one can realize it for oneself: 'My birth is ended, the holy life has been established, what was to be done has been done, I will not experience another existence after this one.' This is how one contemplates correctly the impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and non-self of form.

At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and practiced it.
